Help me identify these piano demo songs!

Unread post by TulsaMJ »

So I've got most of the 50 demo songs from our new-to-us Yamaha digital piano identified, but there are nine of them that I just haven't been able to figure out. I thought maybe there were some people on here who might be able to help me out with these last few. Here's a SoundCloud with clips of the pieces I haven't been able to figure out:

https://soundcloud.com/tulsamj/mystery-piano-demos

If you recognize one, please comment either here or on the SoundCloud page (or even both) so I can complete my list! Once I know what all of the pieces are I'm going to share my list here so future travelers don't have to go down the road I've gone down (although actually, it's been kind of fun having to sleuth it out!)

No takers, huh? Friends on Facebook have helped me identify three more. Only six left and I'll have the whole list! Give it a try!

I had a listen but didn't recognise any or I would have chipped in. Not really my sort of music so I doubt I would have come across any of them before.

That's how I felt about them! They seem SO familiar, but I can't place them.

I think you've called it! Turns out that piece was based on an earlier piece called The Red Sarafan by Alexander Egorovich Varlamov, but to my ears the specific harmonization sounds like the Wieniawski arrangement you suggested.

WOW amazing work! Thanks!

Piano + violin

Unread post by TulsaMJ »

Since 36 and 37 are both pieces for violin + piano, now I'm wondering if 34, 35, and/or 38 might also be violin pieces. Hmm.

AWESOME! Wow, a Civil War era song. According to Wikipedia, he also wrote "Grandfather's Clock"!

Absolutely! Thanks for your AMAZING work finding these! Here's a recording of the last three:

https://soundcloud.com/tulsamj/mystery-piano-demos-2

The songs do seem to be organized by similarity to some extent, so here's some context:

32 Chopsticks
33 Cielito Lindo ("Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay")
34 Over the Meadows / Aj, lúčka, lúčka široká (Czech folk song)
35
36 Souvenir de Moscou H. Wieniawski
37 Zigeunerweisen, Op. 20: Un poco più lento P. de Sarasate
38
39 Frère Jacques
40 Muss i denn (German folk song)
41 Greensleeves (jazz version)
42 Londonderry Air (a.k.a. Danny Boy)
43 Oh! Susanna S. Foster
44
45 Ring the Bell, Watchman! H.C. Work
46 I've Been Working On The Railroad (with jazz section)
47 Love Me Tender (jazz) G. Poulton
48 Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair S. Foster
49 Plaisir d'amour J.P.É. Martini
50 Grandfather's Clock H.C. Work

So as you can see, we are firmly in the "folk music and songs that people think are folk music" section. 35 sounds maybe Russian or Ukranian or something from that part of the world to me - 38 sounds maybe a little Germanic - and 44 as you can see apparently is in the "Americana" part of the list. That said, I've been surprised with this list - on other YDP piano lists I've found, it's grouped by composer. On this one the same composer can appear in several different parts of the list. It's really strange!

When these three are found I'm going to post the entire list on this forum for future sojourners to find!

No trace of 35, aeolian mode, could be celtic folk and 44, major scale, perhaps a lullaby?
I mostly used musipedia's 'keyboard search' option, a lot of googling and finally youtube.
It's amazing how folk songs traveled around the world like original 36 'Krasny Sarafan'...

I still think it's amazing that you've found the ones you've found. I'm a pretty good Googler and search engine user, and thee last few have had me stumped!
