Ok, the last test someone above asked me to check out...... leave the ribbon cable unplugged from the pcb and see if the keyboard is generating random midi notes.
It does not. As expected, it does absolutely nothing with that ribbon cable disconnected. I suppose if it did do something with that cable disconnected then that would mean there is something far more serious wrong inside the piano.

I put it all back together, resoldered the two little wires on the left end, then closed it up and fastened everything down on top of the hood.

Turned it on, opened up a stand-alone instance of Pianoteq, and everything works perfectly! :music-guitarred:  8) :D <->

I played for at least an hour and not one random note, not one stuck note, everything I played worked perfectly and that was that! No more random crap!

Thank You all for pitching in and for listening. And thanks to that other guy whose post I found that told how to take the keyboard out of the shell, whoever you are!
I imagine I just saved myself at least $100 bucks or maybe more by not taking it to a service center.

And Thank You to @Miks and @Saul for the help with pdf docs and with registration issues on the forum. Appreciate your time!

I have been shopping around for a new portable keyboard, and a good experience like this on a forum really lends some extra credibility to the Yamaha name!
Reminds me of my days with my DX7, FB-01, and TX-81Z. Darn it, I wish I still had that DX7.

Unfortunately the fix only lasted 3 days. Then it went back to being a wind chime, all random notes, etc...
Yamaha confirms no parts available. Not even sure what else could cause the problem if it isn't the contacts.
Oh well, I got 35+ years out of it. I can't complain too much.

Sorry to hear the fix didn't last but boy, 35 years out of a keyboard is pretty good going. Definite value for money there I would say? ((i))

What will you do now? New keyboard?

Could it be the keyscan circuit playing up or the chip(s) which drives it.
Forgive my vagueness at the moment I have a hard time remembering the tech stuff (stress.. and lots of it)

I got lucky. The local dealer had two Yamaha P-515 backordered several months ago, one for a customer and one for the demo floor. They said Yamaha services backorders in the order they come in. So the first one came in to Omaha recently but the buyer declined because it didn't have the stand. He chose to wait for the second one to arrive with the stand. The next day I called them asking about getting one and they told me about the orphan one in Omaha. So they are bringing the orphan one to me tomorrow. It's an amazing stroke of good luck because everywhere else in the USA this P-515 keyboard is not expected until early 2021. Right place at the right time I guess. And it's the same dealer I bought the KX88 from 35 years ago.

Thank you. This time the burden of longevity is on me. When I bought the KX88 I was 25 years old. Now I'm 60. The P515 may very well out live me, but I'll do my darndest to see that it doesn't. I'll be thrilled if I'm still making music on it when I'm 95! I know it's up to the challenge, I hope I am too.
