APX500 Preamp Problem

APX series guitars are designed with a focus on playability. Their thin bodies and cutaways that provide greater access to the upper frets, offer smoother switching between electric and acoustic instruments.

Sorry to get back to this again Saul but where can you get the part from for that price of £35.87? Part no: WG849500

I contacted Yamaha and the price they quoted was £48.47

Cheers,

Can you tell me who it was you contacted?

Also just been told we have to remove the prices as they now have a new system which was apparently introduced a few weeks ago whereby they no longer are allowed to sell parts to end users. I find that very odd as it's always been the case that you could by parts direct from Yamaha. My guess is they were undercutting their dealers, not deliberately but dealers were adding a large markup to the rrp.

Hi everyone,

I have an APX500 II, and had a serious battery leakege which rendered the battery compartment completely usless. I bought an Epiphone SG and left the Yamaha untouched for months... I was looking for solutions and no guitar shop could help me for a reasonable price (I live in Barcelona). I started looking at it myself, and I saw that the solutions is really easy. Changing the battery holder is a basic thing, all I needed was the product code of the piece. I looked all over and to no avail, but then I found this thread, and boy was I happy! I identified the product number of the battery holder I would need to change (the WS668000). But now my problem is that I am unable to find anyone that could provide me with this piece. Could any of you tell me from where I could get it (european company please, I found one in the US, but they charge double for transport than the piece itself!!!). Thank you all in advance! And remember to take the batteries out when you buy a new guitar...

Thanks!

Thanks!

APX-500II model is only about 5+ years old (still available in some stores), and the APX-500III is the "new" model in the shops.
Both use the same battery holder, and it should be available as a sparepart from Yamaha customer service or an authorized Yamaha dealer.

I had the same problem .... the original batteries worked for more than a year, and leaked,
but no worse than a good clean could fix it.

When removed, the battery holder can be washed in soapy water, (NOT THE PREAMP !!)
and if the springs and wires ar not damaged, you're good to go again.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip. I tried contacting official distributors but they bounced me off. My local guitar shop guy says that the distributors dont want to be bothered by tyni purchases, they only pay attention when you want to buy expensive things. However i'll try another round, maybe through a corporate email so the local dealer feels a bit of pressure...

I tied to wash the battery holder (took it out of the guitar). I soaked it it coca cola (works wonders!) and it cleaned the stuff off. Problem is that one of the springs broke off :(

It really shouldn't be that difficult to get the sparepart, the lazy distributers ought to have their butts kicked. :/:

If it proves impossible to get, try having the spring made by someone who can do fine mechanics,
model railroaders are known to have the skills for making small parts, springs too.

Hello there,

I’m experiencing a similar problem with my APX500. I’ve had this guitar since around 2007/2008 as far as I can remember and haven’t needed to use it with a speaker or amplifier ever as I only had the guitar for learning purposes and for self entertainment, but am now getting into live performances. My dad and I have been trying to get it to work with our amps and speakers and it works for about a minute and then shuts off when the tuner turns off. For as long as I’ve had the guitar the tuner has always auto shut off after about a minute whether I was done tuning or not... I didn’t realize that this would have any effect on the guitar’s compatibility with an amp. I’m not sure how to fix this problem and am hoping you will remember how you solved yours a couple year ago!

Thanks,

Suzy Q

Hi Suzy, welcome to the forums :)

As you rightly mentioned the tuner in the APX does auto power off after a few minutes in order to preserve battery life. Without the battery of course you have no power to the preamp and consequently no external output. Also leaving the guitar lead plugged in will drain the battery. I do wish they would just put an on/off switch on the preamp to save people forgetting to unplug the lead.

Anyway first thing to check is the battery although you have probably already done that. Rechargeable batteries will not hold power as long as standard Alkaline batteries will so that is something to bear in mind.

There have been issues with capacitors dying in the APX, especially older models. They tend to leak and will need replacing. If you are handy with a soldering iron you can do it yourself.

If you did not want to do that you could always replace the preamp. Yamaha apparently don't sell just the replacement preamp these days and you have to buy the whole thing along with the under saddle pickup. However you could always fit a third party preamp. I think I remember someone on the forum doing that will good results?

My guess is this is a power issue and if it is not the battery it will be a capacitor on the preamp that is failing.

Sometimes it is easier to just fit a soundhole pickup although acoustically the APX series does not project as well as say the CPX due to the shallower body depth so that may not be ideal in this instance.

I am sure there will be other suggestions so hang in there!
