Scratching my head

APX series guitars are designed with a focus on playability. Their thin bodies and cutaways that provide greater access to the upper frets, offer smoother switching between electric and acoustic instruments.

Scratching my head

Unread post by Reedlvr » Fri Jan 17, 2020 1:06 am

Hi from Texas y'all! So I have this brand new (4 year old) APX500III. I say new because I bought it for my wife & she never plays it. I decided to get it out and play it so I put new strings on and now the pickup doesn't work. No sound. new battery good chord & amp, so I loosen the strings & it works! WTH? tune it back up, no sound! This guitar has literally been played 10 times in 4 years! any ideas? thank you for the welcome here BTW...

Hi Reedlvr and welcome to the forums . . . .

THAT is most frustrating . . . . .

So you tune the Guitar to it's correct "pitch" - and NO signal . . .

slacken it off a bit - and sound returns . . . . ?

Somehow the TENSION within the Guitar is interfering with the electrical path (a disconnection) which is reconnected

when the tension is lowered.

I don't know enough about the internals to say much more, but there are several members here WAY MORE savvy

than I on this . . . . <Buzzard> for one . . . I'm really more keyboards

Someone will be along shortly, for sure . . .

IMO - it surely CAN'T be something major . . . . :confusion-confused:

Weeeel , Howdy partner. :D

Welcome to the forum and the string section.

This is an unusual problem.
If the signal dissappears when you tune up,
I guess the tension on the bridge puts preassure on the piezo, thats normal.
Losing the sound isn't.

There could be a bad connection between the piezo and the wire cutting out when pressed from string tension.
Since the warrenty has run out, you might as well take a look under the bridge after having removed the strings.

Either a soldering job or a replacement piezo should do the job.

@Chris: I think you nailed it.

Best regards

Hi Reedlvr, welcome to the forums and the string section :)

This is actually not an uncommon problem with the APX. Not sure why it affects that particular guitar more than others as many of the models use the same under saddle piezo pickup.

As Chris and Peter mentioned this will almost certainly be a bad connection on the piezo pickup itself. Just slacken the strings off, pop out the saddle and pickup and test the connection. Should be an easy fix unless there is a fault within the pickup rather than a connection to it.

Replacements are available but if I remember correctly Yamaha don't sell the pickup on its own and you have to buy the preamp as well  There are however some cheaper and...in my opinion, better pickup options out there.

Let us know how you get on?

Thank you all so much for your advise! I will look under the bridge for any kind of short etc...One thing I didn't mention was I did sand on the saddle to try to lower the action just a bit for my wife. would that contribute?

Sanding the saddle itself should not cause any issue. Did you move the piezo that sits under the saddle or pull it out at all?

If it was a weak solder connection then any sort of movement could potentially have affected it.

Howdy yall... I figured it out! the pickup is bad. I took the strings off, plugged it in and tapped on the pickup, worked fine. but when I pinch it with my fingers it shorts out. how strange huh? anyone know the replacement pickup part number? Thanks for all your help!
