APX700 String Type / Guage

APX series guitars are designed with a focus on playability. Their thin bodies and cutaways that provide greater access to the upper frets, offer smoother switching between electric and acoustic instruments.

Hi Mike,
Welcome to the Forums! Since I'm a keyboard player I can't offer much help. Saul will likely drop by soon and being a guitarist he can probably offer some help.

HI,

I am using Rotosound. Recommended on the Yamaha forum. Good lively sound across all strings. My preference is for lightweight (11 gauge) obvious it is our choice, There is a guy operating out of Henley, Oxon on eBay who does them for good prices.
Next stage up in terms of quality has been recommended by a guitar builder friend, he suggests D'Addario strings. Also to be found on eBay.

I don't know what Yamaha used, probably their own make.

Regards,
Yam!

Mike somebody at a guitar shop told me that Yamaha uses their
own strings.

I have a APX700 too and somebody at the same shop told
me that the strings are 12 guage.

When I change mine I will use D'Addario's Light Phosphor
Bronze .012-.053

Hope that helps.

Only problem is, there's no accompanying documentation nor can I find any online as to the guitars string gauge and type for reference.

If anyone does know, please can they let me know!

Hi again Mike!

My Yamaha CPX came with Yamaha FS50BT "Premium" Anit-Rust strings.
Now where to find them is beyond me. I have been looking around the
net and don't see them for sale anywhere.

Strange that Yamaha bothers to add an advertisment to their guitars
telling us that they have their strings on the guitar and at the same time
make them impossible to buy.

I am going to email Yamaha right now to see if anybody actually sells them.

.... I actually ended up calling them :-)
but had to leave a message. I will post what I find out.

Okay just talked to Yamaha in the US. They told me that they don't
sell them nor does anybody else. The best I can understand is that
the factory in China outfits the guitars with strings but do not make
packages of strings for sale.

The guy I spoke to told me that he gets asked about the strings alot
but they can't get the strings from China. I am not even sure they
know who makes them, whether it is the factory or somebody else.

I read elsewhere that somebody took a tour of a Yamaha factory
and saw strings being wounded, so maybe they make them there
but as I said - they don't make sets of strings that can be sold
seperately.

Lastly, he told me the closest strings to the Yamaha ones are
DR Hex Core strings.

Hope this helps.
