APX-6 Dead

APX series guitars are designed with a focus on playability. Their thin bodies and cutaways that provide greater access to the upper frets, offer smoother switching between electric and acoustic instruments.

yamaha repair 3.jpg
Hello!

I have a similar problem with my APX-6. I haven't used it for many many years but when I took it out of its case the battery was dangling from the connectors and, having now taken it off, one part of the connector is rusted and coroded (see blue-coloured bit in the attached photo).

I don't know the first things about how to fix this probem - I have no technical knowledge of this kind.

Can I replace the bit which has leaked/coroded? Where would I find a replacement? Is it just a matter of getting a new battery? Once the battery is attaced to these wires then it goes in a black box which attaches to the box inside the guitar.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Best,

Cathy

hI Cathy, Welcome to the Yamaha Forums. :D

Since only one of the battery terminals have coroded, you may be able to salvage it with a wirebrush, or some fine sand paper.

If the battery terminal can't be cleaned enough to get a good connection, a new part must be soldered on.
It's available in just about any music or electronics parts store, and it doesn't cost much.

The plastic battery holder can be cleaned in ordinary soapy dishwater.

Give it a try, but don't get too much of the green goo on your hands, and wash hands afterwards.

Since those 'original' clips are mostly of poor quality here's what I prefer to use since several years:

Maybe you can find them at other distributors (this one is a German company...).
Please note the different cable outlets...

Hi Cathy,

A better quality alternative would be nicer, provided it will go back into the box :?

This: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/pp3-snap-battery-clip-hf28f is a basic replacement of what you have.

Best solution is to trace the wires back to their origin and unsolder - and the re-solder the wires of the new connector on.

MAKE SURE they are the right way round . . . New red wire to where the OLD red wire was . . . etc.

Do you have a friend perhaps who can do this (fairly easy) job for you perhaps . . . .

Where precisely are you located?

Best Regards

BTW, its ALWAYS a good plan to remove such batteries, if storing away for protracted periods

I had finished work on the APX-7 some time ago, but I forgot to post the pictures of the completed work.
The final look is deliberately a little vintage or relic (used today often on electric guitars but not so much on acoustics).
I started with a couple coat of stain, walnut color, and then start with the coat of shellac, sanding with # 400, then 600, then 800 on the final coat of shellac. It is very bright and I'm satisfied with the result (there was my first experience in this kind of work).
The wood looks much more free to vibrate and less "choked" by the thick plastic that covered the guitar before. The sound it benefits certainly. I reassembled the entire electronic amplification that I had repaired.
It 'was a great job for me. My Yamaha APX-7 after 20 years is reborn!

Hello,
I already fixed 2 preamps for different Yamaha APX6 guitars.
The electrolytic capacitors in IC1 pcb will start to leak electrolyte and will fall from the pcb.

Most of the APX6 around have this problem already and I'm sure the one that still don't have will soon fail also.

As Yamaha doesn't service this preamps and have no replacements parts for the electronics in this guitar I made a simple Guide to help APX6 user to be able to fix their guitar.

This picture shows part of the guide, for quick reference

Many thanks ilcaccillo for that document. I'm not an axe-man myself, but such helpful documents are a major "raison d'etre" for the existence of forums such as ours.

Helping users to maintain their instruments without recourse to (usually costly) repair facilities . . .
