Yamaha FG350W

Unread post by Mimasu » Fri Jun 21, 2019 7:18 pm

Picked up a 1977 FG350W yesterday. Fantastic guitar. I'm the 2nd owner, first one bought her new in 1978. Included the OHSC.

Now the miracle:

Cleaned her, set her up, new strings........ 8O . Perhaps one of tne best sounding FG's I ever had. Put her up against my 'benchmark' LLX26C. The 350W sounded better :o , but OK, the LLX26 had older strings. Restrung my LLC26C too. And boy they come really close. Been A, B, C'n my LLX26C, LA25, both high end guitars, and the FG350W and they are very similar. This FG350W is the best all laminated Yamaha I have ever played  .

As it comes to playability the LLX26C winns though. And she'd better as she costed me 4 x the FG350W 8) .

VERY nice guitar there Leon. Looks to be in beautiful condition.

Yamaha made some of the best laminate guitars out there. Not so sure any modern laminates could come close at least not that I have come across.

Adjustable saddle too. Not something you come across these days (Y)

I was wondering how they could be so similar sounding, but completely different from some other Yamaha's I have. Then I realized all 3 have rosewood back and sides. Seems that Yamaha managed to let the laminated rosewood guitars sound like rosewood. My mahogany type guitars, solid or laminated, seem to sound more mellow. Less direct. Just different.

One thing is for sure (IMHO): The vintage laminated Yamaha's beat a lot of modern solid guitars. Perhaps it's just a matter of aging and in 20 years they all sound great, but for the time being laminated Yamaha's rule

HNGD Leon, she's a beauty.

Is it just me, or is this the Yamaha version of the hummingbird ?

Peter, not exactly I'm afraid. The 350W has rosewood back and sides. I think the Hummingbird was mahogany.

But we have a better candidate: The FG351SB. The looks like a Hummingbird and mahogany back and sides (1977 catalog):

And guess what. I have one 8) :

Wow, that's awesome too.

Your choice of weapons is excellent.
