Does anybody still have the Sound Controller App (Virtual Pitch Wheel)

Unread post by Amalgamator »

Hi Everyone!

I'm mainly a classical pianist with a P-125 digital piano, but I just joined a funk band that will probably require me to do a little pitch bending.

Rather than spend a ton on an entirely new keyboard with a pitch wheel, I remembered that there was a free Yamaha Sound Controller app (not to be confused with the Digital Piano Controller app), developed only for iphone & ipad, that had a pitch bending capability as one of its primary features.

I was just about to buy an old second hand iphone just for this purpose but then saw that the app has been discontinued...
  • Well first of all, if any of you have this software downloaded anywhere - be aware that it's been discontinued, so hold on to it if you use it!
  • Second of all, if any of you do still have this software downloaded as an executable file, would you be willing to share it? :music-listen:
  • Finally, have any of you used this app on any Yamaha keyboard? What did you think of your experience? I haven't been able to find anybody's experience with it on these forums...
Thanks for any input or alternative simple solutions I might be overlooking!
-jp

PS I know there are ways to run my P-125's MIDI to a DAW connected to an external pitch wheel, but I am trying to avoid such a complicated and potentially somewhat expensive setup. All I have is a digital piano and I want to be as mobile as possible for simple bar gigs and such. And besides, I really like instrument's native quality sounds and would rather not have it playing midi. 8)

PPS FYI, I've never had an iphone/ipad to test it in the past, nor have I heard of anybody successfully using it with a P-125, but as you can see from my yellow highlighting in my screenshot, Yamaha says its compatible. :ugeek:

Hmm . . .

I think what they are saying is that the App will work PROVIDED the keyboard IS compatible.

Try a search for the App's User manual/guide. That SHOULD list compatible Keyboards

. . .and hope the P-125 is in there . . . .

Hi Parametric,

Thanks for your response. I wondered that too actually. But I'm not convinced that's the case because various keyboards in the line list different compatible apps, so I don't think it's a general listing...

I downloaded the app manual and the edition I was able to find didn't list compatible keyboards. I did read an online comment somewhere recently (and I can't find the site anymore ) that the contributor was able to get the Sound Controller app to work with Yamaha keyboards that were not on the official list. So apparently there are official compatibility lists out there, but they may not all be accurate or up to date.

I'm hopeful that somebody in our community will have had experience with this app. I'll keep my fingers crossed that these posts will eventually reach the right eyeballs. :handgestures-fingerscrossed: :geek:

I have to add that I'm surprised that this app has been discontinued because it is one of the few simple products I've seen that addresses the pain point of it being so difficult to add a free standing pitch wheel to a digital piano. And I've seen other musicians lament this challenge as well. I don't know if any members here have enough of an in with Yamaha to know why they stopped developing it.
