Free SY22, SY35 and TG33 editor

Unread post by Scott »

Years ago I found a free software editor for the SY22, SY35 and TG33. It's important to have because the vector synths have many FM parameters that are not accessible from the hardware of the synths. The program was written for Windows 98 but can be run on newer systems with Compatibility Mode. The link below is to my site.

This is a good editor, I often use it. Well laid out and simple to use (Y)
I'm currently using it on windows XP ( what! ) with a Roland UM2 USB midi.
I have tested it also on windows 7 with out issue.

The Sy Edit software has such a complicated but resilient history. There is an updated version of it available for newer 64 bit systems. (info below)

To access the updated 64 bit version and expanded patch database join the group tg33sy2235 at groups.io
https://groups.io/g/tg33sy2235

2 particularly useful files there are:

1. Filename: 'SY Edit-Win7-x64.zip'
Rich Hanson's SY22/SY35/TG33 editor program for Windows 7/8/10 64-bit

2. Filename: 'Sample SY Edit Database.zip' (expanded with other 2000 patches)
Additional sounds and Java conversion programs that can be used with Rich Hanson's SY Edit program, including compatibility with the SY35 Voice Editor by dasfaker that was part of CTRLR.org .

(To replace the Sy Edit Database with this version read the included file 'Sample SY Edit Readme.txt')

As I understand it Richard Hanson developed SY Edit up to version 2.1. User Zajebca from the Gearspace forums was able to recompile it for 64 bit, but seems to have used the older 2.02 version (probably didn't know about the 2.1 version).

And lastly Greg Holwell seems to have compiled some resources for the SY22/35/TG33 systems at Groups.io. This includes a Sample database you can replace the SY Edit database with which includes over 2000 sounds.
(I could have some of these details wrong, and I hope they are corrected if anyone has better details)

Enjoy!

Thanks to the tip (Y) and the unexpected help ....

I was interested in trying this new database, unfortunately SY edit stopped working (using v2.2 with UM-2 USB MIDI)
which reminds me of how much I hate USB midi for being unpredictable and unstable sometimes, it annoys me no end.

However it has revealed a fault in my set up which has plagued me for ages ...

although reinstalling the drivers (again) fixes my issue,

I have found that SY edit is not compatible with a DoreMIDI Merge-5, sysex transfers crashes it.

So after a bit of messing about, (bypassing the merger) the database works on SY-edit 2.2 x86 :-)

1. If your SY Edit got "Error opening MIDI port: A device ID is used which is out of range for your system.", with a USB MIDI port, remember that the latter's drivers are installed only when the device is plugged in. Restarting the computer with the required USB device already plugged in fixed my issue.

2. The original SY Edit installed into the folder C:\Program Files\SY Edit which you cannot do under the User Account Control provisions of Windows Vista and later unless you are running in Administrator mode. The 64-bit one allows any available folder to which you have write access.

3. As well as the moderator of the aforementioned groups.io group, to which I copied all files from the equivalent Yahoo group prior to its closure, I am the author of the Sample SY Edit database and the associated conversion programs. The idea was to have one enormous database into which sounds are categorised individually by name and/or waveforms used, rather than a whole lot of scattered 64-voice files. When the SY35 Voice Editor appeared on Ctrlr, it was an easy task for me to account for the ...(2).syx files (64 x 592 bytes) created by its Browser option (e.g. for TG33-format files which otherwise couldn't be used) and feed these into the SY Edit database via the SyxToSyEdit and MergeSyEditDB programs. I carefully did not use SY Edit and the Synth option of the Ctrlr SY35 editor at the same time.

Just a quick note for users of my sample database, its new(er) readme file deals with multiple collections of voice dumps among other things.

And now the readme file corrects the merge invocation.
