It looks as if there was a recent change, and non-members (or logged out members) can no longer see replies to posts. When I am not logged in, I get the message: "This topic has 9 replies. You must be a registered member and logged in to view the replies in this topic."
I don't remember having seen an announcement about this change. I would be interested in getting more information about the reason behind the change.
Personally, I would prefer if all posts would be visible to visitors. I often look at the forum from a device where I am not logged in, and I can no longer do that.
That function has been in place for years but the extension has only recently been updated by its author to work with this version of phpbb. It is there, obviously to encourage visitors to register and hopefully engage with the forum. Just tick the "remember me" box next time you log in

As mentioned, I use multiple devices, however, I use only one device for logging in and posting. Let's see how this change affects my behavior.
I am not sure if this "feature" also affects non-human users. I suggest to keep an eye on organic search traffic. If people can not find the forum, then people can not engage.
Search traffic is fine. It doesn't affect that at all.
