Sontec in UK have been able to source direct from Yamaha a set of control knobs, scratch plate and fittings as well as replacement tone pots for my 1982 SG1000. The tone pots are 250k and not the original Noble pots (as they no longer hold stock after they were discontinued). They’re really good at communicating and I think prices are quite reasonable, especially compared to private sales on eBay etc.
They’re going to take a little time to arrive but they’re push push all be it they cant source the original 300k Noble pots. I’ve already put a pair of 250k Alpha push push pots in until these arrive. I found these on EBay fairly easily, if you have any trouble let me know.
I have found some listings of the Alpha push-push 250k pots on eBay. Allparts also stock the audio taper version (part number EP-0283). Perhaps I should order a couple to try.
I've been lucky, I've managed to find 2 NOS Nobels 300k push push, if I'm completely honest the Alphas work and sound fine 250k - 300k, is it that noticeable? I'm sure choice of amp, EQ settings and effects pedals have more impact We just had our first band rehearsal in nearly 12 months following COVID lock down and the guitar sounded great with the Alphas in. Good luck though Boogie Man, fiddley things to solder.
Perhaps I have been too used to the push-pull pots on my SG's, I prefer push-push to push-pull pots. I find the push-pull pots on my late model SA-2200 to be a bit troublesome to use. It is good that I really like the pickups as HB, so I don't split the coils much with my SA.
Soldering wires to pots: Very hot iron and do it very quickly.
Thanks for the tip on quick soldering, I was thinking of using a heavy paper clip or crocodile clip as a heat sink. I like push push too, had a push pull on a PRS and had the same issues, especially trying to switch mid song. I do like the coil splits on the SG though when using quite a lot of modulation and delay.
Thank you for accepting me into the group! I thought for my first post I’d offer a repair solution for those of us who have a broken push-push tone switch and would like to keep the original 300k tone pot.
I recently purchased my first SG1000 and am very excited to join the club! The guitar is in overall good condition and all original parts (as far as I can tell) except for 1 on the tone knobs. I purchased a used knob off of reverb and when I went to replace, well, you guessed it, I pulled on the switch in the down position and broke the switch! I did purchase a replacement alpha 250k (which I knew I could scrape the carbon to achieve 300k) but mentally couldn’t handle changing out the original for some reason! lol
Well, I found an almost exact replacement switch made by Alps American, minus the notched actuator. I was able to extract the original actuator and transplant it into the new switch with no problems and I’m back in business!
Here is the part info for the replacement switch and you can order direct from Digikey:
