For over 40 years, the FG series has continued to offer outstanding quality and tone on affordable instruments. These player favorites have played countless gigs, written thousands of songs and are heard by millions of people year after year.
There is a FG 170 on reverb I am interested in purchasing. There is no serial number available. The seller claims he doesn't know why. Said it maybe because it is old. FG 170's were produced between 1972-74. My 1971 FG110 has serial numbers so that it seems odd that the serial numbers are missing. Would Yamaha ship a guitar without serial numbers? Any comments would be appreciated. Thx.

Hi simzee1, welcome to the forums.
Sometimes, as you probably know, a serial number is not always immediately visible. The normal place for it on the FG170 would be on the bracing just inside the soundhole. However, it could be anywhere. I doubt it would not have one. Leon may know more and be able to add to the conversation once he comes online.

Never seen a FG from that peroid without a serial number. I've seen one or two with a very faded number, but still possible to see there once was a number.
But it's possible that once in a while a rare FG without serial left the factory. If somewhere in the production process it missed the serial I don't think they would stop it from leaving the factory.
It's very well posibble that there is a production code (not a serial number) in the inside of the guitar, somewhere in the side of the lower bout, that would make it possible to date the guitar. But I have a lot of FG's and only a few have a readable production code.
Thanks for your response regarding the missing FG170 serial numbers. The seller has (2) FG 170 for sale on reverb both with out serials numbers. I was a little put off about purchasing with out a serial number. Just seemed odd. Thanks again.
