Yamaha PSR-172 double key sound

Unread post by Miqueias »

Hello everyone! It's my first post and I need some help with a keyboard, Yamaha PSR-172. At first it had problems with some keys that weren't working, so I took it apart to clean and it worked pretty well, but later it started again. So after checking, I noticed that some resistors on the "ruler" under the keys were rusted and falling apart.
I couldn't find any number or what kind of resistors they were, so I could buy and replace them.
I bought some, that someone recommend here in the forum on another post, it worked, but the keys were doubled... I decided to replace the ruler altogether, got new ones but the same problem occurred.. any advice or hints on how to fix it?

I don't know if it's some sort of difference between the new resistors and the old ones that makes this happen..
Thank you in advance!

Hi --

Just a few thoughts...

You might not like this comment, but is it really worth rescuing an inexpensive keyboard from 2003? If you enjoy reviving 20+ year old electronics, that's one thing. Might be time to cut your losses, save time, and buy a new PSR E-series instrument.

If the resistors are rusted, then the keyboard may have been abused (e.g., gotten wet, exposed to moisture for a long time). Definitely not a good sign and the keyboard may not be reliable in the future.

Instead of replacing resistors individually, maybe find a second hand (used) PSR-172 and use it for parts? The keybed printed circuit board usually plugs in and out.

I wish you good luck -- pj

Yeah... I agree that it's easier and cheaper to get a new one, I decided to try and fix it because it's not much used, so... It's worth a try.. the problem is only on the two boards that sit under the keys... The rest is fine. They were rusted because a long time ago someone spilled some water on the keys.
Ahh and I got the name of the parts wrong, my bad.. it's not the resistors that are bad, but the diodes!
So I got a pair of new boards... But I Suspect there is some sort of incompatibility between the new diodes and the rest, as you said it, it's an old instrument..

No prob. Since you were willing and able to attempt a non-trivial repair, I figured it wasn't your first rodeo. :)

Water and electronics -- not good bedfellows.

Best of luck moving forward -- pj

I rechecked the keyboard again and cleaned it, now it's working like a charm! No double key sound!
In my case, only the diodes were the problem and a detailed cleaning was needed. 😁
