Motif ES midi files on MODX

Unread post by The808musicman »

I’ve got old midi files sequenced on a Motif ES. Will these sequences play with the same/similar sounds on the MODX? Trying to decide whether to get the MODX or a used MOXF as I no longer have my ES.

Although the MODX does contain some Motif sounds they are mostly from, I think, the XF and in any case the mapping would be different. Which is not to say you could not use your existing MIDI files with the MODX, you would just have to tweak them to correspond with the sounds you want.

Thank you Saul - so probably the same for the MOXF as well since it is mostly MOTIF XF files? I’ve got some other older MIDI files (on floppy disk) from my Ensoniq TS10 and that’s probably the same. Just would need to find some sounds that make sense and hope mapping of drums especially are the same.

Yes I think you will come up against the same situation with the MOXF.

Personally, given the power of the MODX with its advanced AWM2 and FM-X sound engines, it would be worth the hassle of tweaking your original Motif ES midi files. The sound quality will be so much better 👍

The Motif ES has a General MIDI (GM) bank. So do the Motif XS, MOX, Motif XF, MOXF, Montage, and MODX. If your ES MIDI files were created using the GM bank, then they can be played correctly on any of those later models, although there may be some relatively slight tonal differences from the way they sounded with the ES.

GM files from the Ensoniq TS10 should also be compatible (that's the whole point of General MIDI), but there would probably be more of a tonal difference between the TS10 and the Yamaha models.

Thanks - if I recall correctly some were general midi and others weren’t. With the TS 10 I also sequenced with loaded samples and also used the JV 1080 and TR Rack. Not going to be easy recreating these songs. Looking into VSTs of these boards.

If you decide to get one of the Yamaha models, I suggest loading your files with the GM bank selected. It should then quickly become apparent which are okay as is, and which will need more significant work to recreate.
