Sorry if this is a really dumb question but the physical Montage can is meant to control ESP right?

Unread post by montagechiq »

lets say Im on Ableton. Can I use my physical Montage M6, to connect to my computer running ableton, load the ESP plugin into Ableton and control the plugin via the Montage M6 over Midi. The sound generation will come from the plugin and the midi data will be played on the physical montage and saved within Ableton.

This is possible and, is the whole point of this system, correct?

Yes you can.

ESP functions like any vst. So you can do anything control wise with it that you can do with any vst.
You can have your Montage connected as a controller only, and only use the ESP as the Montage sound engine on the computer.
This means that you don't have to have the Montage connected, but can use any other controller.

I have ESP on my laptop to use it anywhere, and my Montage mainly stays at home switched off.

...and because of that you can see why Yamaha has not yet released ESP as a standalone retail product. It would put a huge dent in sales of the Montage M because all you would need is any controller keyboard and the software.

...and maybe loose sales on Halion as well since Yamaha own Steinberg. In my opinion, ESP sounds much better than Halion.

I have Halion but of course, not ESP. There are elements in Halion that sound fine but I don't think it can really compare with ESP.

Yes, being a Montage M owner I like the luxury of being able to "Montage" my music with no Montage in site. In fact, I have to confess, I'm starting to migrate to the camp of folks wishing you could just purchase the vst standalone. Perhaps down the track, if they do eventually release it standalone, I might sell the hardware and just have a software licence :D

I agree with Saul that it won't be released as a standalone anytime soon.
That would not only mean Yamaha transitioning to an hybrid cloud/software - hardware model (something like Roland does) but also take a big hit on Montage M hardware sales.
For starters imagine people upgrading from Montage classic to M. Unless you get the M8X for the poly-aftertouch there is just no real incentive to buy the new hardware. Your old Montage would be a perfect master keyboard for the ESP.

This discussion on the Steinberg forum brought a smile to my face. Someone think Yamaha should include ESP for free in Cubase Pro

As the ESP is essentially a software version of the Montage M it would definitely not be included with something like Cubase Pro. The value of the software to Yamaha at the moment would be too high.

I am not sure we will ever see a retail release. It is more a hope than anything. Yamaha could, potentially, make huge profits on it but I think if they ever do release it, we will be waiting a good few years, certainly not before the end of the Montage M product cycle :(

I have the ESP plugin running and my montage is connected to my computer.

How come only the Super Knob and the 8 little knobs above the faders are synced with the plugin? Am I doing somethingn wrong?

none of the other faders, or buttons do anythingn to control the plugin.

ie. the two don't seem to be synced. for example when i change a preset on the plugin, the preset on the physical keyboard remains the same and vice versa. I can't control the plugin with the keyboard other than the knobs.

it was my understanding that, I could browse different patches, edit sounds on the plugin, using the keyboard. Is this not the case ?

I know i must have some sort of setting wrong...
