So my son wanted the Edge controller which are expensive but I found a returned one on Amazon for less.
What's to prevent someone from buying a new Edge controller and ejecting the removeable joysticks and replacing them with their used ones and then returning the controller for a full refund?
Each joystick is $40 so if stolen by swapping out that's a nice racket.
The serial numbers are within 5 digits between the joysticks but the serial number of the controller itself is much different. I wonder should that be similar for the actual new unit that hasn't been tampered with?
Does Sony have a matching list that links them together? Maybe that will appear if we register it but I doubt it.
It would have to be highly coordinated for Sony to match serviceable parts with the main unit.
There is a serial number on the box but only matching the primary controller. Because there are actually (3) separate products in the box all (3) serial numbers should be required by law to be listed. Otherwise anyone can steal the (2) sticks without being caught. That's crazy. Surely Sony isn't that stupid.
Is there some reason you think you may have bought a unit with used stick controllers?
I often get customer returns from Amazon. It is just the nature of the business. Otherwise, what would they do with the goods people send back just because they don't like them? All retailers that have a no-quibble returns policy have the same issues. I am generally fine with that, as long as the goods are in "as new" condition and come with a full warranty.
But I do see what you mean. It would be easy to send the whole unit back with used stick controllers but wouldn't they know this was not the same unit because of the serial number? Or would they even check

Just heard about a guy, that bought a PS5 from Amazon Sweden. When he tried to get online with his PS5, the console was banned. Turened out it was banned because it was reported stolen earlier. Someone probably ordered a new PS5 and returned a stolen one to Amazon. It's a bit strange that Amazon don't check that the serial number matches with the PS5 they sent and the one that was returned.
Checking the primary serial number is easy if the box also has it listed. The unique problem with these new controllers is that they have user replaceable parts that have their own serial numbers on the parts as well. So if the box doesn't display all (3) unique serial numbers the other (2) can be stolen easily. See in the photos as the unit is essentially modular.
IF this were a synth you could steal the (2) cards out of it and return the main unit. Put (2) broken cards back in place of the ones that work.
