Thank you Miks! If I buy one, I will definitely verify the battery's state...!

UPDATE: okay. Put in a new cap, bought a new, fresh lithium battery, in another holder, redid the trace.

It FINALLY works!!!!! The patches save and remain in the machine! BONUS: i found an unused DSDD diskette at work... I can save/load everything!

Very glad to have a working DX7iiFD!! Now... I need to update the Firmware... cuz I need the self-test app in it.... I have no clue how to do that! Miks, do you know anything about those? I got an E! Board, will that be an issue?

WOW that is indeed very good news! (Y) ((i))

If you have an E! board installed it is 'plugged in' at the location where the original firmware eprom used to be! 8O

The E! card has its own firmware eprom living on the card itself. You can't use the original DX7 firmware together with an E! card! I'm not familiar with the E! card(s) and therefor I can't say if the E! also has a built-in test program - but after a quick look into the manual I suppose it has not... :?

Thank you very much Miks for all the help! Seriously, this dx7 would be in a junkyard if it you hadn't helped me out!

For the battery, I had an idea to put two battery holders in parallel, and in case they die out, if I remove one, The memory is still preserved.
The holder has an on/off switch too. I might make the modification and have the holders outside of the synth for easy acces... I dunno yet. I don't want to ruin its looks either!

Now, I am looking for substractive analog type sounds... if you have any ideas or suggestions...

Thanks a bilion again! So happy!

That's absolutely NO place where a DX7 should come to rest

There's no need for two holders imho. If you once have to swap the battery you can leave your synth switched ON if you act very carefully... 0-) - remember: the cap will buffer the battery voltage for a little while - I dare to say if you swap the coin cell quickly the internal memory should not be affected... but there's NO guarantee on this! 8O

Maybe you'll find a nice place for the holder(s) inside the housing where easy access is granted anyway...

Do you have an example for one of these? (Synth and/or sound).
Thanks a billion again! So happy!
My pleasure!

Hello again!

For the examples, i would say this:

https://youtu.be/95L_v7Wvzj4

This video has a lot of great sounding and warm pads. For the leads, i found good patches.

I love the dx7, but damn I have no clue to to program it. Nothing like my old korg or my polivoks!

I'd love to have tangerine dream-like sounds as well as jean-michel jarre sounds, but the early stuff... not too glassy. I find the dx7 is easy to get from really warm to cold as shards of ice

Update: I am in love with the synth. Seriously, I can makr it growl like a polivoks, make it warm and fuzzy like a moog, cold like a... well i guess a dx7...! All seem to be good now, the battery holds, everything works..! So happy!

I have some quick questions for you Miks though... you know CS1 and CS2... i can map them to effects, but I cannot seem to have C2 control portamento...

What i do to make it sound like like a crazy tone machine is set cs1 to balance a/b. The CS2, pan. Then, i put the synth in monophonic modd with pan... the result is just... I dunno, I find it amazing... i have a mixer + volume control, so i can set a voice as a sub oscillator and play the main program... it definitely is startinb to sojnd more and more like a typical subtractive analog. So happy to have been patient and persistant.

But now 'd love to have some sort of control ovef the tone. I know this is not subtractive synthesis, but for some reason i am having a hard time mapping the cs1 & 2 to have other effect than volumes.. i'm pretty sure it's something i don't understand yet...

Any help is appreciated!

Sorry mate - but I can't offer help on this due being not that deep in programming the DX7's 8O
I'm a kind of a 'preset' user - only tweaking a little here and there (but only if I know what is and where is it to do - IYSWIM  )

BTW: does your DX still have the E! card installed or have you already 'ripped' it out?

My main issue now is the firmware. I'd love to have a higher version

Well - that hasn't to be an issue - IF you or a (tech-savvy) person you know have the opportunity to program ('burn') an eprom there's still hope... 8)

But to use the latest 'genuine' DX7IID/FD firmware you have to completely remove the E! card 8O
