APX4 Battery Box Replacement - Help/Advice Needed

APX series guitars are designed with a focus on playability. Their thin bodies and cutaways that provide greater access to the upper frets, offer smoother switching between electric and acoustic instruments.

APX4 Battery Box Replacement - Help/Advice Needed

Unread post by BluesBoyLondon » Tue Jun 19, 2018 9:26 am

Hi All,

I am new to the forum but have come here because I need a bit of advice. I hope someone can help me out.

Here is my tale of woe/gross incompetence. I borrowed my brother-in-law's old APX4 for a gig over the weekend. He hadn't played it in a while, so I offered to clean it up, put new strings on and change the 9v battery as a way of thanking him for the loan. Unfortunately, I am of an age where I am a bit "bifocal" these days and tried to change the battery without my glasses and whilst in a bit of a hurry. Not being familar with the APX I completely didn't see that you need to pull the clip on the battery box outwards rather than inwards to get the battery compartment to pop out. (You can all stop laughing now - apart from being a bit short-sighted, the other electro-acoustic I was using did require the clip to be pushed in and I assumed it would be the same). You can probably guess the rest. I forced it and snapped the plastic clip.

As it turned out, I broke it "in the right way" and the box and clip still does do their job but you have to flick the clip out with a screwdriver or a blade to make it pop out. However, I don't really want to give my bro-in-law his guitar back broken. I took it my guitar shop but they didn't have a replacement box so I have bought one online and it arrived yesterday.

My question is, how easy is it to fit a new 9v battery box to an old APX? Can anyone give me a detailed explanation of what I need to do? Or should I take it to a shop and get a professional to do it? I don't want to compound my error by breaking the guitar properly - and I won't be at all insulted if you explain the process as if I was a child of five-years-old because, as you may have guessed, my technical skills are not that much further advanced that that!

Seriously though, any help or advice on this job would be seriously appreciated.

Hi BluesBoy - and Welcome to the Forums. . . .

Your description is Excellent - I can see in my mind's eye, that wretched cover with it's "fingernail" release flap.

I think we ALL own something that has one of THOSE fitted . . .

When will they realise that Musicians are often rather "on the edge" and as a result, are prone

to bite our fingernails . . . . (kinda goes with the gig, IYSWIM)

So we HAVE to resort to the screwdriver - ANYWAY

So - nonsense aside . . . we have a very active string section here (I'm more keyboards, myself) and one of them

will be along shortly to help you with what's required. (Y)

Thanks Parametric. Yeah, you would have thought that after all these years I would have finally realised that jamming a screwdriver into something that is not a screw rarely gives you a good outcome. I look forward to the arrival of the string guys. :)

Hi BluesBoyLondon, welcome to the forum and the string section. :D

We've all tried something like that at one time or another, and the conclusion is: the biggest tool is not necessarily the best tool.

I'm not sure if you can get the exact battery holder needed, but there are lots of aftermarket parts that will do the job.
Here are some examples:

https://reverb.com/item/4694912-yamaha- ... e-22834200

https://reverb.com/item/5900114-yamaha- ... older-slid

Depending of your skill with tools this could be easy or something to let a pro do.

Your local music store should have something usable and they can install it if you don't wanna try.

Best Regards
Peter

Thanks for your reply and welcome Buzzard. This is the part that I have bought:

What I need are a few tips on how to actually get the old one out and put the new one in. Hopefully someone can help.

Well, if you already have the part, you just dump it in.

145903-tmp3164[1].jpg
Remove the old strings and DON'T put the new ones on before the new batterybox is well installed.

 It's a good idea to use a small piece of tape to hold the bridge saddle in place while you change the batterybox.
( It can fall out when there are no strings to hold it down.)

Notice the "wings" on the side of the batterybox, they need to be pushed together to release the old batterybox.
There's only one way to get to it, through the guitars soundhole.
Once the "wings" are depressed, push the battery OUT from the inside.

IF the new batterybox is a good/perfect fit, push it in from the outside,
if not, you need to make the hole fit, either by filing some wood away,
OR by gluing in some wood to compensate.

Fitting the hole for the batterybox may be a bit fiddly.
Make sure you know how and can see what to do.
This is a matter of how well you can do this job.
IF NOT, let someone with more experience do the task.

Regards
Peter

That is exactly the sort of answer I needed - an idiot's guide for an idiot! Haha. What I didn't want to do was force the thing out and break it properly. Your instructions make perfect sense. I will give it a go. Thank you.

Absolutely not

You did however sound a bit unsure on how to do the job, so I'd rather give too much, than too little information.

Was the aftermarket batterybox a perfect fit in the guitar, or did you have to mod the hole before installing ?

 Knowing this detail will help others replace a broken batterybox.
