Sustain Pedal

Unread post by RatherBeGigging »

I am trying to use one of my old sustain pedals with MODX8. It is a Kurzweil pedal that also worked fine with an M Audio Axiom midi controller. When I plug it into the "sustain" foot switch jack on the MODX, notes ring automatically when the keys are pressed and the sustain stops when I press own on the pedal (i.e. the opposite of what I want).

Before I buy a new sustain pedal, is there a way to make my current pedal work correctly with MODX8?

Switch sounds like it is closed when pedal is up and open when depressed which is opposite to what you need , picture of the inner workings will show if it can be reversed or not . Some switches have three contacts on them and swapping the contacts around can reverse them .

Thanks for the reply. Unlike many of the newer sustain pedals, my Kurzweil pedal does not have any external switches for reversing the polarity. I opted to pick up a new one. Back in business!

I don't think it's so much a matter of "newer" pedals... I think it's more that the major keyboard manufacturers have little interest in assuring that their pedals work on anyone's boards other than their own. Whereas companies who are more invested in the "accessories" market have more of an incentive for a broader level of compatibility.

I did not want to make a new thread as my question is pretty similar to this 2 year old thread.

But I just got a MODX and I cant seem to get my generic pedal working. It worked for the Casio CT-X (which is what I am switching from). I just need it to work as a sustain/damper for "traditional piano style" playing. The pedal does have a polarity switch.
I went through the manual and for some reason there is no mention of how to connect pedal or settings. Is it because it is unusual for this rig to use a pedal? or does this brand/line forces one to buy the branded one? I only had the rig for a day so maybe im missing something....thanks!

Welcome to the forums Keroleen . . .

Some boards require the pedal to be plugged in BEFORE you power-up in order to see" it . . . .

if you plug it in after power-on - it might not be seen . . .

As regards polarity - some boards will detect what you have and internally switch to suit, others will just work "backwards" IYSWIM?

I don't own a MODX - so it's just a maybe

Hi,

The MODX does not require the pedal to be plugged in when powering up. That’s generally only the case for keyboards which can change the way the pedal works. In that case they assume that the pedal is not depressed when they are switched on and thus they can infer the type of pedal from that. MODX unfortunately can’t do that. So you either need a pedal which works as Yamaha (and Roland) pedals or a switchable one. Why the mentioned switchable one does not work I don’t know...

IIRC - Yamaha and Korg use opposite polarities . . . .

The cheaper Yamaha pedal I had would not work correctly with a Korg Digital Grand I once played years ago . . .

I modded the pedal with a reversing switch - and all was fine . . . . 8)

Could someone suggest if it is worthwhile purchasing a sustain pedal for the MODX6 and which one is most suitable to go for?

Most Players would consider a Sustain Pedal essential, as an aid to expressive playing - especially on Piano . . .

The Yamaha FC4A pedal is a quality Sustain Pedal with a TS Jack on the end of the cable.

The FC3A looks similar, but will support "Half-Damping", but check that (a) You need it and (b) that the MODX can use it.

The FC3A has a TRS Jack on the end of the cable (to carry the Half-Damping message).
