Arturia Collection V6 Including DX7!

Unread post by Saul » Tue Dec 05, 2017 5:37 pm

I see Arturia have announced the release of their Legendary Keyboards collection V6 which not only being a great collection of virtual vintage keyboards this time around includes the DX7.
Arturia DX7.png
In 1983, the DX7 changed the world of music. Today, the DX7 V gives you the power to change it again.

Nothing says ‘80s like the sound of the DX7. Our authentic recreation gives you all the same FM digital technology and sounds that earned the instrument a revered place in the history of both keyboards and contemporary music. We didn’t stop at just replicating it, though —we re-imagined it. New operator waves, extensive modulation additions, arpeggiator and onboard FX chains enhance your sonic possibilities exponentially. For bonus points, an intuitive graphic interface makes what was once a daunting programming task a creative joy today.

We put booster rockets on the instrument that created innumerable ‘80s hits. Now you can create the definitive sounds of today and tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up, Arturia have not emailed their user base yet.

That is Christmas sorted with Cubase and Arturia upgrades (at least).

Looks like the new synths compared to V5 are
  • DX7
  • Buchla Easel V (quite a rare synth, so a good choice)
  • Fairlight CMI
  • Clavinet
TBH, I think they missed a trick on their choice of FM synth. The DX7 has been done before by Native Instruments with FM8. Much better would have been to do a true model of the seminal SY77 or SY99. I would have purchased a proverbial granny to sell for that one :D

I'm also a little intrigued with the Fairlight choice. The last V collection introduced the Synclavier, which I can see the point of, given that it also did FM and additive synthesis and had quite a unique sound (all over the self titled Genesis album in 1983), but from memory the Fairlight was basically an 8 bit sampler/sequencer. Admittedly one of the first and seminal for that reason, but I have no desire to recreate the "bit crushed sound" of 8 bit sampling in 16KB! :D So I doubt that is one I will use, but you never know....

I have Version 5 here somewhere. I thought it was installed but I may have taken it off to save some space but I remember only using a few of the included synths. Not entirely sure I see the value in some of them. As you mentioned Derek, why would you want to use an 8 bit sampler/sequencer, although have they not added in their own 'Arturia' magic? Same as they have with the DX7.

I also have Native Instrument FM8 buried on one of my drives. It's almost painful to think how much money I have spent on software over the years that never get's used! but yes, FM8 or even FM7 was and probably still is the best representation of the DX7 in software. Still, would be interested to give Arturia's attempt a run through just for comparison.

Seems all those grannies might be safe yet

I made a mistake last year and paid about twice as much to go from V 4 to V 5 as some other people, apparently because I simply bought the update from V 4 to V 5 at the "special" price shown on the "My Arturia" page. This time I'm doing what other people did-- updating my existing V 5 products for free via the Arturia Software Center, after which the cost to update to V 6 will presumably be reduced. At least, I'm hoping that's what will happen. Anyway, it looks like my desktop computer is going to be tied up all night downloading and installing updates!

I updated all of my existing V5 products, but the upgrade to V6 is still $199. Oh well, now I have to meditate on how badly I want the new synths and the new version of Piano V. :(

It’s one of the reasons why I have made great efforts in updating my keyboard rig so I can make better use of them (more on that some other time). I too have a ridiculous amount of soft synths but they do not get much use because I was always worried about how I would replicate their sound on stage.

I don’t have that excuse any more. :)

And every time I play UH-E DIVA I find another gem of a sound! :)

I think their update price is a little steep, and could be a little more generous for an initial period, but I will still go for it to keep up to date, and some of the other improvements like GUI scaling are helpful for my aging eyesight! :)

Isn't that the right price though? The full price is $471.00

If you take into account the cost of Arturia DX7 on it's own is $99 the upgrade price seems about right...in that context although I agree they could have at least offered the complete update at less than $199 at least for a initial period.

I'm not decided yet. The only synth that interests me there is the DX7 and will have to find my Native instruments FM8 and fire it up for a comparision. Although from what I have read, the Arturia version seems a bit more flexible.

Well, I do think $199 USD sounds okay for 5 products-- 4 new ones plus 1 upgraded one-- as it comes out to $40 apiece. And last year I was only too happy to upgrade from V4 to V5 for $199.

But earlier this year some people on another forum were talking about Arturia having a sale, and one guy said he upgraded from V4 to V5 for only $99.

I'll have to go back and reread what he said he'd done, because I remember him saying the only thing new in V5 that interested him was the Hammond emulation, so it might be that he updated whatever he could from V4 for free, then purchased just the Hammond emulation by itself for $99.

But I remember pointing out that several synths in V5 had changes in the their names from V4 to V5-- such as going from V to V2 after their name, or from V2 to V3-- and he said that his updated synths had the new names, so I don't know. This time the only one that had a name change like that is the Piano, which can't be updated for free like the others.
