On Line Guitar Reviews...

Unread post by AlexC » Wed Apr 04, 2018 12:33 am

Just a small complaint of mine to see if anyone agrees with me or if I’m just being a bit fussy... There’s thousands of great players out there and many of them review guitars and equipment, but I find it annoying that usually they play with a huge amount of distortion. It means you can’t hear the sound and tone of the guitar. After a certain point all guitars and amps and pedals start to sound the same with mega overdrive. Just reign it in people... at least for half the review so we can actually ‘hear’ the equipment.
Be interested to know what anyone else thinks about this.

I absolutely agree with that and it's one of my pet hates about reviews. I always want to hear a guitar without effects first. If it doesn't stand up clean then I am not interested in it.

It seems to me that many reviews are more about showcasing the guitarist rather than the guitar?

I also agree, I usually only listen to a select group of reviews if interested in anything I can't try before I buy.

And in acoustic reviews it seems necessary to hit a natural harmonic - ping, ding, tring! Any guitar will do that! 😂 And how many songs actually use that anyway?

Again this is showcasing the guitarist rather than the guitar although having said that, not all acoustic guitars are equal in how well they will produce a harmonic. I make use of harmonics myself depending on what I am playing.

This is a pet peeve of mine. I'm yet to come across a good YouTube channel that does unbiased reviews. So many of them turn it into a place to showcase their skills, not the guitar's tone.

That said, I'm not convinced that reviews actually help. I always find myself playing the guitar first, asking friends for their opinions, and then corroborating my choice with online reviews. I see them as the "garnishing" on my review cake - a way to justify a purchase, not to select a guitar.

I guess it's difficult NOT to try and play as well as you can when demonstrating a guitar. It's finding that fine line between playing well enough to let you hear how good the guitar CAN sound when played competently and overplaying to the point where it turns into a "performance" rather than a demo of the guitar itself.

I have seen so many guitar reviews by people who actually can't play very well and I am sure they are not aware of the fact that they make the guitar sound bad and put you off buying it or even trying it for yourself.

Likewise I have seen reviews by people who think it's a good idea to use backing tracks when demoing an acoustic guitar and in doing so completely masking the tone of the instrument.

There are also so many variables involved such as what was used to record the instrument, how well it was mixed down and of course the equipment you are using to listen to the demo on.

Videos can only be a rough guide and should act as inspiration to get to a store and try the instrument for yourself.

One of my favourite youtubers at the moment, Mary Spender:

Regulars in here KNOW I am not a guitar aficionado by any means. I DID play (electric) once - a long time ago, but quickly "brick-walled", being self-taught and found I was unable to progress as a result.

If demoing a guitar, it's not unreasonable to think for a moment about the styles that guitar is aimed at - surely?

Viewers will be interested in HOW the guitar sounds, both acoustically, and, if electronics are fitted, - CLEANLY amplified.

If the recording is well done - it should give an idea of the QUALITY of the action, neck and frets - and DEMONSTRATE how these CONTRIBUTE towards the overall SOUND . . . . ?

A nod to different playing styles would also be beneficial, from simple strumming with a flat-pick, through several "finger-styles", perhaps reaching a Classical "excerpt" if appropriate to that Guitar . . . .

No harm either in a few "Harmonics" - and how it sounds with a Capo in place. MANY people use them . . . .

Viewers will be interested in the Style THEY play - so they can relate to whether or not THIS guitar is a potential purchase . . .

Backing Track? - well, probably "If you must". It's NOT unreasonable - as we are mostly USED to hearing guitars playing WITH other instruments . . . . but for the purposes of a demo, it should probably be very low in the mix.

As regards FX overall - probably NOT good for a demo. The Guitar is the "Star", after all. Excessive use of effects - and it quickly becomes a demo of the FX Box . . . .

Just my opinion - of course . . .

Thanks Chris, I'm on your team here. ((i))

I find it impossible that a review can be unbiased without any personal touch of the player, just showcasing the guitar.

Of cause we don't want the entire review to be drowned in effects, a bit of dry sound should always be included.
For me, a good ballsy distortion sound including the odd squealers let's me know that this guitar and it's pickups are ready to rock.

Here's a reviewer that i find entertaining, leaving me with enough info to decide if I like the guitar or not.
BTW, he's reviewed quite a few Yamaha guitars as well.

The showcase below gave me a WTF moment hearing an electric banjo playing one of Sir Pauls finest. (last half of the clip)

Some reviews out there are much better, and some suck so bad that i abort the clip before time.

It is all totally dependent on the guitar. With acoustic guitars it's all about the tone, not effects or guitar pyrotechnics on the part of the player. Also built in electronics on most acoustic guitars are a complete waste of time unless it is a proper mic system because under saddle piezo pickups do not represent the the true sound of the guitar at all. It will just sound like every other acoustic with a piezo pickup system so what's the point? I have tested enough of them and without exception they are all the same.

The other aspect is not to make the video too long. This is not a performance it is a review and with guitars you can pretty much say all that needs to be said within three minutes including demoing the sound. Keyboards are far more complex and they need to cover more ground so running times are going to be longer.

For electric guitars I still prefer to hear them clean...which is probably why I stick to acoustics ;)

Good thing there are a lot of videos out there to choose from!
