Yamaha SY85 Audio interference

The Yamaha SY85 is a digital music workstation introduced in 1992. Unlike other Yamaha synthesizers of the time (SY77 and the SY99) the SY85 does not use FM synthesis. Instead, its sounds are based on samples, which can be layered and modified to create new sounds.

Yamaha SY85 Audio interference

Unread post by Myshkin » Sun Apr 15, 2018 11:05 am

Hi Guys,
Long time since I posted on here after switching out the disc drive. I ended up with not enough space for the sy85. Anyhow move house now and it's back in the rig setup . Only issue is I'm getting interference on the audio out. Strange sound . It's on the headphones and the line out Sounds almost like an old dial-up modem. Any thoughts. I can post audio recording if anyone's interested. Its faint but puts noise in the mix. Wondering if I need to open it up and check some of the capacitors?

Im mostly using it as midi controller, but occasionally needing sone of those quircky sounds. I love the way I can dial up a preset and quickly adjust a fader. Some good atmospheres in there. Anyway slight prob on midi in that it renders not only duplicates but quadruplicates in the daw. Set up is MIDI out to daw midi in from daw, audio out from separate track

Hi,

Is it a high pitched whine? It might be the display inverter.

Is it lower pitched? It might be a ground loop if you have your SY and other audio equipment (mixer/amp) plugged into different sockets. Try running everyting in the audio chain from the same socket.

By all means post an audio sample if you can.

Hi,

I've attached a sample. Recorded on mono / L output into StudioOne3.
I needed to turn the line level right up to make it more pronounced. But its there in the background all the time. Much worse on headphones out of the keyboard. It glitches when switching between performance and song mode.

Hi.

Do you get the noise with all audio/MIDI leads disconnected and just listening via headphones?

From memory (as I cured it on my SYs, so have not heard it for years!) it doesn't not sound like inverter whine, which is like a high pitched whistle that should not get on the outputs unless some internal screening is defective.
