Another Yamaha fan

Unread post by Floydman » Tue Jul 03, 2018 8:41 pm

My first post here. I've been playing now for 40+ years now and have owned various makes of guitars; Guild, Gibson, Taylor, Martin and Eastman. The models from these companies were all in the $1000 to $1,500 range. Not the top of the line, but all quality instrument. The issue though, I never felt 100% happy with any of them.

About a year and half ago I came across a 1981 Yamaha SJ-180 for sale for the price of dinner out. Right off the bat I really liked the neck profile, string spacing, body size and neck scale. After I made some upgrades (bone nut, saddle and pins, upgraded tunners) it has become my favorite. So much so, I've sold/gave away all my other guitar except my all hog Martin (it was a gift).

I can't believe it took all this time to find an acoustic that was just the right fit. Also hard to believe it is a guitar that had a msrp of around $180. Go figure....

Welcome to yamahamusicians.com and the string section :)

Sounds like you got a real bargain with that SJ-180!

I have always been of a mind that you don't need to spend the big bucks to get a great guitar. Yamaha have been at this game a long, long time and they make some of the best guitars in the world. Having said that, I don't own any of them ;) I pretty much only play Dowina acoustics right now. They just feel right, sound superb and are hand built...not expensive either :)

I have owned plenty of Yamaha acoustics in the past and I have tested quite a few over the last couple of years. My favourite out of the current line up is again not an expensive guitar. It's the FG830. I think Yamaha nailed it with that one. That's not to say their more expensive models are not good but the sweet spot for me has always been under the $5-600 mark.

Having said that, one of my Dowina guitars, the Rustica sells retail at approx $500 and I personally think is better than the Yamaha but of course these things are debatable and we all have different likes and preferences.

Anyway, great to have you on the forums. Do post a pic or two of that SJ-180 when you can. Always great to see our forum members guitars.

Alright, let's get to it.

Under the text field, click the "Full editor & Prewiew" button.

Then simply pull your pictures into the textfield,
then they become attachments that you can add wherever you chose in between your text.

Ill add a picture in your post above, then you can see how it's set up if you press edit for your post.

Regards
Peter

Not sure how this comes out, but below is my SJ-180. Also a photo next to my 000-15M. The SJ is very close to a OM/000 in size.

Beautiful work. ((i))

you're the living proof that an inexpensive beater can become a fine instrument and a favorite guitar.

Thanks for sharing.
