REVO-1 Curved Keyboard Just Arrived From Canada!

Unread post by Saul » Tue Jul 10, 2018 5:24 pm

Not sure if many of you have seen this or even know about it? Produced by Canadian company Nu-Motion it's called the REVO-1 Curveboard.

It's basically a 61 note full size wireless midi controller keyboard that you can wear slung over your shoulder, sit it on your lap or as seen in these photos, mount on a stand.

It's still a prototype. There are only 20 units in the world and this one I have is the only one in the UK.

Will be looking at it in more depth over the coming days and weeks and update as I go. It's certainly a very interesting and unusual keyboard :)

Ergonomic :?:

Doesn't look that way to me. while reaching for the lower and higher keys, you might as well pull up your socks

I doubt something similar will happen to guitars in the near future.

Must admit that was probably not the best product video I have seen however, REVO-1 is actually very comfortable to use, not just strapped around your neck although of course that was the main use Nu Motion had in mind, it's also easy to use seated or on a stand.

Probably a better representation of how REVO-1 is used can be seen in this EPICA clip below:

Much better. :D It actually looks cool in this clip … BUT …

It still looks like light torture … strap around the neck and a support resting towards the players gut.
I think the 80's Keytars must have been much more comfy.

I would find it useful for an extremely fat keyboardplayer with short arms, just glue it directly to his belly.

Just like the huge load of different weird computer keyboard designs that have been developed, but hardly any sold,
I will not predict success for this shape of keyboard, but of cause, I may be totally wrong.

Peter

Ha ha, it's an odd thing and I do know what you mean but, it is really comfortable. It's lighter than it looks and the way the strap and mount is designed means it works in a similar way to a camera gimbal, the weight...what there is of it is counterbalanced by the person wearing the keyboard. It almost floats around with you :)

I forgot to say, that I would be interested in the design Ethos behind it. I.e. why a curved keyboard? Why is it better than what we all know and love?

I will ask them Derek but I would guess the idea was that keyboard players could get out front of stage and not be tied to their usual place off to the side somewhere. Of course not all keyboard players are unhappy with their lot and I am sure, as you know there will be situations that require quite complex setups that perhaps would not lend themselves to this sort of performance keyboard design.

Is it better than a keytar? I can't answer that as I have never used one but I am pretty sure there are none that have wireless midi and the functions REVO-1 has. I'm no expert on that though so if there are such things let me know?

Will be interested to see. I don't think I ever really want to compete with the guitar player and my setup of two boards and a foot controller (and pedals) means I have gotten too used to sitting down now when performing!

Oh I fully understand that Derek. I can't see Rick Wakeman running around with a REVO-1 either...at least not these days but there are players who would like to get out there. I think the question is would they want to do it with this design of keyboard?

From a purely performance aspect it is eye catching and different so it works on that level. I think IF I were a pro keyboard player I would probably want to give it a try but that's me. It definitely won't be for everyone.

I still think it looks so much cooler when you rock out on a keytar compared to a "bent" keyboard.

The Alesis Vortex Wireless II 2018 model.

I did cheat a little, the keytar shown in the tube clip is the older model without wireless,
but it gives an idea of how it's mobility takes the keyboard player to the edge of the stage if he/she wants.

About rocking out ……….
I noticed Dereks comment about sitting down comfortably … well, I usually do too.
Either on an old barstool or on the couch.

mmmm...that actually looks a bit clunkier to me.

Also the Alesis is a three octave jobby where the REVO-1 is 5.

Good pricing though. Not sure how that compares to the REVO-1 because it's not a retail product but yeah, definitely some interesting things to think about there.

Just been giving the REVO-1 a go strapped on and walking about. It's a lot of fun and the sense of freedom you get from not being confined to being seated and there being no cables is immense! Now if I were only a better keyboard player! ;)

Actually, Wakeman does get out with a Keytar. At the Anderson Rabin Wakeman concerts, Rick and Trevor have been duelling whilst walking around the concert venues. And he still keeps perfect hand posture whilst doing it! 8O

I like to hide behind my boards, though! ;)
