Yamaha FG260

Unread post by Mimasu » Sat Aug 11, 2018 6:46 pm

Yesterday I went to a guy claiming he had a "factory new" 1971 FG260. The guitar wasn't factory new, not from '71 but '73, let's call her 'near mint', but the best part: in a great playable state.

Many of the old Yamaha 12 strings suffer from raised tops, need a neck reset etc. As I said, this one is in great playable state. Just bad I very seldom play 12 string, but for a collector these guitars are fantastic. So she was added to my collection.

Nice detail, a stamp on the label (that I genarally don't like at all), but this is from the original shop that sold the guitar in 1973, and it's a stll the same adres in Amsterdam. I'll be therse soem days in two weeks and always go by to check out inventory.

My goodness, another one :D once again, HNGD to you. :D

Finding vintage guitars in near mint is getting harder, nice one.

70's Yamaha FG 12 string guitars sound amazing. It's hard to believe they are all laminate. I played a Taylor 150ec not long ago. I think the vintage Yamaha sounds better. The only problem, all the vintage FG 12s I've come across have had serious neck issues. Finding one that's playable is a great find. It also looks outstanding.

I must have been lucky till now. None of my Yamaha acoustics ever turned up unplayable. If there was a problem I could solve it with some set up, sometimes lowering the bridge saddle. Both of my 12 string acoustics have some bellying, but still play OK.

I always assumed that these neck resets were a kind of a Yamaha problem, but one of the most famous Martins, Tony Rice's D28 that before him belonged to Clarence White, had a few neck resets in the past.
