NGD: Yamaha SA 60

Unread post by Asmikace » Sat Aug 11, 2018 6:53 pm

As much as I wanted a SA 90, someone on Facebook Guitars For Sale group had a mint SA 60 with original case, truss rod tool, and manual for sale for a good price. Only problem is one of the tone knobs grip rings is missing but shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement. Here are the pictures the seller sent me as it should come in next week. I am at hotel away from with only my SG 2100s and miss having my SA 2200 and been jonesing vintage Yamaha semi body style I need to play around with.

HNGD, looks good.

Once you have the feel of it, let's know how it sounds and handles.

Looks like a fantastic catch. I love it when a lot of case candy comes with a vintage guitar. Show us some more pics when she arrives.

Nice one, they changed to that case at the very end, so your serial number must be 30,000 or so....
I am still tempted to create bone saddles for my SA60 and SA90 as I don't think the plastic ones are good enough and neither look good.
And yes, more photos please

Got it today. Other thab missing that ring round the tone knob, its pretty untouched. The strings are rusty and need to get my favorite strings for semi hollow but sounds very good. Probably one of the best early 335 copies from Japan.

I got some 10 round wounds on it and acoustically its great but in my opinion except for the real upper end humbuckers for the period, the pre-SG2000 Yamaha humbuckers are a bit tinny but ok at the moment. I might swap with those Spinex pickups when i get home while I might order some Guild HB pickups for my SG 45 enhance the sound and looks of the guitar.

I like the SA60 with it's original PU's. Don't think they're sounding thin, but that's all a matter of taste.

I AB'd my SA60 en SA2000. Both SA60 en SA2000 having new same strings, adjusted PU hight the same etc. Amps settings the same. First adjusting the neck PU's (I'm mainly playing these neck PU's), after that adjusting the bridge PU in relation to the neck PU's.

You'd think these two are very close as the SA60 is Yamaha's last step before the SA2000. But these two are different guitars. The output of the SA2000 PU's is higher and the SA2000 seems to have somewhat more highs. Can't tell which one is better. They just differ. The SA60 is a jazzer, the SA2000 is a rocker.

Did the same with my SA60 and SA50B. Same trick. Very little difference in sound. Very similar in all PU configurations.

Planned to do some recording but that didn't work out :( .

I also own a SA 2200 but still love the body shape of the SA 50/60/90 guitars. I am a bit spoiled with my SA 2200 with the SD antiquity pickups as they sound so lively and warm. Its hard to judge any other pickup in a Semihollow.

As a fellow collector I always do and will keep them in the orignal case so it doesn't get lost.

Also I always wonder if Freddie King played on as a SA 60/90 is used for artwork on his Burglar album. Probably used his ES 335-355 Gibsons but still cool it related to one of my favorite blues musicians.
