Excellent. perhaps a first question for him in his new role is to find out why the heck Kontakt 5 @ £359 is nearly as expensive as Komplete 11

OK, Komplete 11 is currently on sale at £359, usually £479, but even at full price it makes Kontakt 5 expensive in comparison.

I mention it as I am looking at a sample package (Ethera) where I need the full version of Kontakt to run it, ad I could go for Komplete, but not sure I want another 155GB of sound samples and instruments (given everything else I have)

So I will probably just buy Kontakt 5, but it does seem a tad expensive.

Thanks for the info Chris and big congrats to Tim. Was he the guy you got in touch with about the S61 loan?

I agree that there is some odd pricing but I think it is to encourage people to buy Komplete 11. As you pointed out Derek, with the full version of Kontakt 5 bundled into Komplete 11 it makes the latter better value for money.

The Full version of Kontakt may seem pricey but built into that price is the fact that you can run sample products with it that have not paid a license fee to Native Instruments..or some of them anyway.

So NI need to balance out the loss of revenue from those products.

Of course not everyone who creates sample libraries can afford to also pay a license fee. They have the option to either run their samples on the free version of Kontakt with a time out restriction or on the full version with no restrictions but they need to pay that fee. Not perfect but seems to work?

I still think it is odd pricing (their prerogative of course). The problem with the policy is that I have no interest in most of the content of Komplete 11. Of course I have the option of purchasing just Kontakt, but £339 still seems a little pricey compared to the other VSTis that I purchase. What I really want is a full version of Kontakt with no library content (as I have my own content), assuming the content is adding to the cost (and download size, which those of us on slugband still need to watch).

Just an observation. :)

Has your broadband STILL not been updated Derek? 8O They are certainly taking their time with that!

I agree about the pricing of Kontakt. I have an older version as a standalone product but that is problematic because it won't load many newer libraries and like you I would not be using most of the stuff that is bundled with Komplete 11 which is why I am still using Komplete Select.

Seems there is hardly ever going to be a perfect fit. The music software business often reminds of Sky TV where you only want a couple of the programs and get 20 others you absolutely will never watch. No added value if your not going to watch/use them.

Yeah, Slugband still not updated. Just waiting to see what the Welsh Assembly will be offering next in terms of support. Should be due soon. One option I have is 4G Broadband, but I am waiting a little to see if the package prices drop (or bandwidth allowances go up).

The best thing I ever did in the meantime is to ditch BT and go with Sky. Cheaper cost and so far, my Broadband has not been slowly dropped in speed in the way the BT used to. So I am still on the giddy heightes of about 2.3Mbps (with BT it would always drop to about 1.4MBps). Still a joke when the Government says that the USO for broadband should now be 10Mbps.

Back OT, Komplete Select is not an option for me, as it only bundles the free Kontakt Player.....

Indeed the Maketing model for NI is a vexed issue for many.

As Saul has observed - it seems to be somewhat "bundle" driven . . . . .

I started with Komplete10. They then offered a very advantageous upgrade to Komplete11 - which I went with . . . .

The following Christmas (I think it was) there was a upgrade to Ultimate - it was about £250 . . . . . somewhat expensive, but I HAD the money spare at the time . . . .

Thing was . . . . I WANTED Session Strings Pro, BUT, it only comes bundled with "Ultimate" . . . . .

Pricing it separately - it was £239 . . . . . . So - what would YOU do?

Thing is, Although ULTIMATE represents an "embarrassment of riches" - You DON'T have to install everything . . . . .

When you login to the NI "Service Centre", it lists ALL the instruments you have licensed to you. EACH ENTRY shows whether it is INSTALLED or "ready to INSTALL" - so it helps keep it all tidy and minimal. You only install what you need . . . ((i))

Additionally, you ARE allowed to install on TWO (might be Three?) Computers -

(so long as they are not used at the same time) - I have it on my main PC and my laptop for instance . . . .

As has been said, the FULL Kontakt5 does allow you to use unhindered, offerings from other Sound Designers.

Steve Howell at HollowSun did some very weird and wonderful "Alien Machines" and a host of other stuff for Kontakt . . .

You owe it to yourself to check out the <Products> here . . most with audio demos - Prices usually ~ £20

@Derek - IF you were to consider Kontakt5 Full version - you could then avail yourself of Steve's "Shell" for £8 +VAT -

to put your own samples in and make a Kontakt instrument to tweak . . .

So I think we have agreed their pricing model is strange but makes more sense if viewed as bundle driven. I know I don't have to install everything, but I'd prefer to see a good discount for Kontakt with no content (I have plenty of my own). And they can later entice me with upgrade offers! That would work for me!

We'll see the options when I come to buy this later in the year

I can certainly ask about that
