If you are a new MODX owner you may be interested in downloading the Bösendorfer Imperial Premium Grand Piano from the yamahamusicsoft.com website. At the moment the links for the MODX are not up on the site however, you can still download the file because it is exactly the same as the one for Montage. In fact all Montage downloads are compatible with the MODX.

So how do you get hold of the Bösendorfer Imperial Premium Grand Piano?

1 - Go to https://yamahamusicsoft.com and if you have not done so already sign up for a free account. You need to do that before you can download any of the free or paid for sounds.

2 - Once you have your account go to https://uk.yamahamusicsoft.com/synth/bo ... no-montage and add it to your cart.

3 - Copy the promo code from the same page bose17 and proceed to the checkout. Enter the code and you will see the original price of £69.99 now changes to £0.00

4 - Complete the checkout and download the file. It is approx 430mb in size and comes down as a archive zip file.

5 - Once you have the downloaded file, unzip it (double click on a mac) and it will unzip to a folder called 'Bosendorfer_Piano'

6 - Inside that folder are two files. A Bosendorfer Piano.pdf which just gives you a little info about the sample and a file named 'Bosendorfer.X7L' which is the one you now need to copy to a usb stick.

7 - Yamaha state that the usb stick needs to be formatted on the MODX but I just used one I had laying about and which I think I had previously formatted as FAT32 anyway, it worked fine.

8 - Copy the file to the usb stick and then put it in the USB to Device port on the rear of the MODX...making sure the keyboard is powered off first.

9 - Turn on the MODX and click the settings icon at the top right of the screen which takes you into the 'Utility' screen.

10 - Now click on 'Contents' and it should automatically detect you want to load a 'Library' file and you should see the Bosendorfer.X7L in the right hand window. Click on that and it should start loading. You will see a progress bar whilst this is going on and it will take around 7 minutes to complete. Obviously don't power off whilst loading!

11 - When you load a library file like this it does not overwrite your existing files.

12 - Once loaded you will be at the Bosendorfer screen and will see all the many new types of piano sounds now available to you.

I have to say I prefer the Bosendorfer over the preset CFX voices but that is a personal thing and I have always been a big 'Bosendorfer' fan.

Give it a go and let me know how you get on and what you think of the Bösendorfer Imperial Premium Grand Piano.

And this goes against (takes away from) the 1 GB of memory we have to work with in the MODX, correct...?

As far as I can tell yes that would be the case. There is 1Gb of "user memory" and I can't find any reference to any other sort of memory apart from the 5.67Gb wave rom. Of course you can also record and save to user data to usb.

My understanding is that it is delivered as an X7L Library file, so it goes into one of the eight library slots that you have. If it is identical to the Montage then that will into your 1GB FLASH and nowhere else.

What this also means is that your User data is not touched, as the library spaces are separate to your user bank, although of course if you have loaded so much Wave data into FLASH that the X7L won't load then you will need to do some housekeeping of the data to make the space.

This is where I think the Kronos is so much smarter with the SSD approach: 3GB of user RAM, but the ability to do sample streaming from SSD, so you are only really limited by the the sample preload from libraries that you can fit into 3GB, and your SSD size - 20GB by default, but you can put a larger one in.

That doesn't stop the Montage/MODX from being a fine synth, but it is interesting to compare approaches and, it does mystify me why Yamaha still insist on designing limitations like this in, when their competitors have had a better way of doing it since 2011 in the Kronos, and whilst it was not in the first OASYS release in 2005, I think it got added later. :? :?:

If you don't have a Montage or a MODX (yet) and if you want to download the Bösendorfer nevertheless just in case the promo would not be valid anymore when you buy your synth, you can find a direct download link on the Montage users' FB page ;)

If they have permission from Yamaha to host the file that's fine. We do also have the file on the server but have not put up a link because it would be breaking Yamaha's terms and conditions to do that. Will need to check.

Hi Saul,

I just followed your procedure to download and install the Bosendorfer pianos on my MODX. Your procedure worked perfectly. Thanks for laying it out so clearly.

The difference in sound between the Bosendorfer "Imperial Grand" Performance and the "CFX Concert" are fairly subtle, to my ears. But since I am running the MODX through a Yamaha DXR10 and a QSC K10 (PA speakers) the differences may be masked. Good studio monitors would likely make the differences more easily discerned.

Both (of the actual pianos that were sampled) are fantastic pianos, and I too love Bosendorfers. The main differences I hear on the sampled sounds are a little more fullness in the lower registers for the Bosendorfer, and it seems like the mid and upper ranges of the Bosendorfer might have a slightly more "pure" sound. By pure I mean slightly less prominent harmonics. But, again, through PA speakers the differences are subtle.

I may run the keyboard through my studio monitors to see if the differences are any more pronounced. But for live performance I would say both pianos will do just fine! Especially since you can choose between full concert sounds, brighter pop piano sounds, mellower ballad piano sounds, padded pianos, etc.

Dennis I think your assessment of the differences between the Bosendorfer Imperial Grand and the CFX are spot on. Have just been comparing the two myself. However to hear the CFX properly you need to choose 'single" from the attributes otherwise choosing the one from the initial start screen has it layered with FM EP2 and that muddies the waters somewhat.

The CFX is a very sweet sounding piano but out of the box as it were is sounds a little too bright for me. I prefer that woody slightly earthier sound of the Bosendorfer. Of course it depends what you are playing and each piano has its strengths when used in a mix or in different genres of music.

Its so great to have access to so many high quality acoustic pianos in one box :)

After using the Montage for 2 years or so, I still like both the Bosendorfer and the CFX. I still use them both but for different songs. The Bosendorfer sounds better for me due to the described fullness for standalone playing. The CFX cuts better through the mix in some cases when the full band is playing.

What about the CP1 samples that were released free for Motif XF/MOXF? It was arguably the best piano for MOXF, has somebody tried it in Montage / MODX and how does it compare?

Yes, I tried them. Nice, but not so nice that I would invest the sample memory to have them in addition to the others I already have. Subject to personal taste, of course...

I am a Roland VR09 owner and 98% of what I do is about gigging, very tempted by the MODX7 mainly because its simply the first keyboard to feature uncompromised "flagship" sounds and its 16 pounds! The only concern I have is the VR09 has one of the better organ sounds outside of the Nords Hammonds and Kronos, but while I did like the sounds of the modx organ I really found the leslie cheesy at least in videos, and again, being a gigging musician who likes his back and has no roadie, I want it all in one keyboard, has anyone use the minivent with yamaha keyboards

Just chiming in to note that - for me - the CFX is a very lively-sounding piano, very pleasing to the ear even after hours of playing. This is quite different than my assessment of the Kronos pianos, which tend to fatigue the ear after a bit (although they sound gorgeous at first).

Newbie question - inside Yamaha portal I'm asked to upload a file in order to register my ModX. What file shall I use?

I have not come across this before but the two MODX's I have here are on loan from Yamaha so I have not registered them. Still I can't imagine why you would be required to upload a file just to register your keyboard. The "normal" way is to ask for your product serial number. Does anyone else know about this?
