MOXF6 has 2 notes, A & D# that are 20db louder in every octave?

Unread post by binko67 » Mon May 13, 2019 11:34 pm

What could cause all A's and D#'s to be 20db louder than all other notes? Sorry if this has been discussed here before, but I am desperate!

Thanks

The A and D# keys share a pair of key matrix lines. There may be a problem with the matrix decoding or cable connections.

Do those keys have any velocity sensitivity at all? That is, if you press them very softly, are they still just as loud?

There are two contacts per key. Velocity sensing is done by detecting the time it takes from the closure of the first contact to that of the second contact. The matrix decoder apparently isn't sensing any time difference for the affected keys, so the data it outputs is for full velocity.

If the MOXF is under warranty, I suggest that Yamaha have a look at it.

If out of warranty, are you comfortable with attempting a repair yourself?

I'm very familiar with electronic repair although ive been retired for 11yrs. At 77, I am a little more shakey than I used to be, but I would rather attempt it myself!

A PDF copy of the service manual for the MOXF6 can be downloaded from:
elektrotanya.com/yamaha_moxf6_moxf8_sm.pdf/download.html

There's a flat cable from the keyboard's 61H board CN1 to the KEY-IF board CN704. Pins 1 and 2 make the connections I previously mentioned. Verify continuity between the boards via the cable and connectors at each end. If you live in a coastal area, especially check for any signs of corrosion, which is not uncommon in such "salt air" regions - it can cause open circuits and if severe enough, leakage between closely spaced adjacent pins.
