Thanks for sharing!. I have in queue several synths to fix, if simpler than that one. But I hope someday to get into the big ones

Thanks for sharing. I wasn't quite sure why these where Behringer videos, but the following from the Youtube page explains it
We recently purchased a collection of heritage synthesizers from iconic 80's band Tears For Fears. Our Music Tribe UK Care team begin repairing the Prophet 5 in a quest to bring this piece of musical history back to life.
My SY77 case was in a similar state when I purchased it, and it came up good, but I don;t think it was owned by Tears for Fears!

What I wonder is why they don't have a proper soldering iron and use a pretty ratty-looking one. I think they should have a soldering station to work on those gems!

Sometimes small details count quite a bit and you can't do a proper soldering job without proper tools :naughty:

Yeah, I was a bit bemused that he didn't use more/fresh solder for the SECOND battery connection.

I would have . . .

Also, that bit about replacing capacitors . . .

I always thought that Electrolytics were the "Bete Noir" of these aging boards?

Aren't Tantalums much more stable? . . . . . . and therefore first choice for replacements?

The problem with Tantalum caps is that they tend to die short circuiting themselves, which causes great havoc on the PCBs :hand: ... I have seen several cases on test equipment gear and should be the same on synths.

I use to replace them with low ESR electrolytics, which now have lower ESR than the Tantalum caps originally used. I have not detected any problem so far with that kind of replacement in radio frequency gear (Tantalum caps are used on high performance switched mode power supplies on them). I use higher voltage than original caps also, as sizes have reduced quite a bit over the years. So far, so good :D

The original electrolytics should be tested (here an ESR tester does wonders, as it tests on circuit) and, if bad, replaced with new ones. Of course, any leakage sign is also a replacement must.

Thanks for sharing, Chris.
What a lovely old synth. Great that it's been saved and repaired.

BTW, did you notice that the laptop he was using was ... a Lenovo Thinkpad still running Windows 7. Yay!
Couldn't make out which model though.
UW500; 2xMU1000 + PLGs AN, DX, VL, VH & PF; SC8850; EWI4000s + VL70m; Samson Graphite 49.
Privia PX-560, AN1x, Novation X-Station 25. E-MU 02 cardbus + 1616m x 2. Sonar 7 PE and now CbB. XGworks.
Garritan GPO4 and GPO5, COMB2, JABB3, IO, Organs, Steinway, World, Harps ... and now CFX Concert Grand.
