Problems with Korg USB MIDI Driver and Windows 10 Build 1903

Unread post by Derek » Tue Aug 13, 2019 5:47 pm

Hi,

Just thought I would mention that I have been avoiding Build 1903 of WIN10 due to all of the DPC latency spike problems it suffered, but these now appear to be resolved - thanks to a lot of grumpy game players!

So I finally updated on the weekend and got bitten by the Korg USB MIDI Driver issue mentioned over on Korg Forums. Which means the driver is not seen by Windows.

Korg have now released a new driver, but it is best to completely uninstall the existing driver first. And I used USB Oblivion as well to remove all traces of USB port enumerations before installing the new driver.

After that it all seems to work again.

Sadly, however, this Windows Build finally seems to have caused issues with the old Stalwart MIDIOX, which is a huge shame. Whilst you can select any MIDI port, nothing seems to be seen by MIDIOX anymore. So time to look for an alternative...

I hear MacOS is a good alternative to Windoze...

Yup. Certainly has no USB enumeration issues like Windows does. :)

Sadly a few of my favourite VTS are PC only, and my VST host is (currently) PC only.

THAT is curious . . .

AFAIK - I don't have any usb enumeration problems with Win10Pro64, but I DO have shed loads with

Ubuntu 18.04 LTS which I run with the Ubuntu Mate front end . . . (dual booting on a separate HD)

It's taking 3 minutes to boot to Desktop while it objects to all addresses, ports etc.

It gets there in the end, but it's such a pain. Begin to wonder if I have a crap mobo or bios . . . . ?

I need to get on the forums and see if the luminaries can fathom what is the matter . . . .

I really only run it to keep my hand in so to speak. I run a few apps in parallel with Windows . . .

Gimp, Open Office, Audacity, Banshee/RhythmBox (to administer my iPod) . . . .

Interestingly, Reaper now has a Linux native version, which might become interesting for the Future . . . . ?

I think it also depends on the specific driver and the interaction of it with Windoze. Simple test for each device you have is to plug it into every single USB port you have on a computer and see how many enumerations you end up with. At least 50% of my devices will give you different device names for each port, which is a problem for your programs that are set up to look for a certain port, but Windows has given it a different enumeration. Couple that with limitations like the Windoze ten MIDI device limit and you can easily run into issues. I have been tripped up on stage by accidentally plugging devices into the wrong ports that has caused huge config issues, which is why I ended up labelling leads and ports to ensure correct connection all the time.

OS X just works of course, but not an option to me on stage due to some of the plugins I use, and the cost of an expense of a Mac sitting on stage. I am also not aware of them doing an NUC type form factor, which is very discrete in my rack, but I could be wrong. That and all the time and investment I have put into Cantabile as the best live VST host around, which is currently PC only. When the long awaited OS X port occurs, I may well look at that again.
