"Guitar" Fingers . . . .

Unread post by parametric » Thu Aug 15, 2019 2:45 am

A young lady, who was student during my time working at the Uni, recently inquired if "this was normal",

regarding the condition of her fingers, after playing (in this instance) a REBAB . . .

A Central-Asian stringed instrument that may be plucked or bowed . . . .

She also plays Guitar, having recently purchased a Gretsch Ltd Edition Streamliner G2622TG P90

Candy Apple Red from PMT . . .

I suggested that my researches indicated that the Rebab is strung with 2 or 3 BRASS strings,

which might explain the slightly greenish hue?

I remember from when I first started playing Guitar, I was advised to dip the fingertips in Surgical Spirit

to speed up the callousing process :o - not sure if it was true - but it sure did STING . . . .

Ouch :(

My fingers may look close to that after playing for hours, but they clean up and even out after a little while

Looks like she has been a VERY enthusiastic player there Chris :music-guitarred: 8O

I don't really get that any more. I used to when I started out. What I find is that some people press far too hard on the strings than they need to and then end up with really sore fingers as a result.

As with so many things...less is more. If you are having to press so hard on the strings to get clean notes that it hurts then something is either wrong with the instrument set up or your playing technique may need a little modification.

Years of playing will make your callouses hard and thick. My fingers would have indentations from the strings after about an hour or more of playing, but it would fade. But, is the index finger bruised in this photo? I've never seen that.

Indeed Saul, very talented. I think Clarinet was her first study IIRC and she also plays Bass Clarinet.

She got interested in the Gamelan on the "World Music" course . . (The Uni had a Javanese and a

Balinese Gamelan, and also the smaller Gamelan Degung) This is where she came across the Rebab . . .

She went on a got her PhD, and still performs Gamelan and Clarinet . . . .

Yeah. I always thought that light gauge strings and a low action meant that you could fret a note merely

with the weight of the fingers? I guess if it's properly set up - this is so?
