My latest acquisition: AN1x

Unread post by EB5AGV » Thu Aug 15, 2019 6:40 pm

Hi all,

Well, after some time (weeks  ) without buying any new gear, I have just paid for what I think is the ultimate classic Yamaha synth I should add to my stash of hardware synths, a pristine condition AN1x

I have paid a premium price for it, but it is really like new and, well, sometimes the GAS is, as you know, impossible to get by

More on this as soon as it arrives next week!

Congratulations, the AN1x remains an awesome synth.

Be sure to check out the AN1x patches on marce-music.com

With he AN1x of course you are back to SYSEX only for data transfer. You can just about get AN1xEdit working on Windows 10, or you could check out my an.factory librarian via my signature links for a cross platform solution.

Well, it is not possible to fit all the gear, so I have configured three permanent setups, which right now are these:

Setup 1 - lower floor

That is my main (mostly) only-piano playing setup, with just the Yamaha DGX660 (*)

Setup 2 - upper floor, LAB1

Three keyboards, one on the desk and two on a double K&M 18810 support at the right:
  • Main keyboard (desk): Yamaha Genos
  • Secondary lower: Studiologic SL88 Studio
  • Secondary upper: Yamaha EX5
  • Other hardware: Akai S5000, Korg Triton Rack, Roland XV-3080, Yamaha TX81Z, TG77, SPX990, EX5R, MOTIF RACK XS
  • Computer: running Cubase 10 Pro, NI Komplete 12, Analog Lab 4, Pianoteq 6 Stage and some other VSTs

Setup 3 - upper floor, LAB3

NI Maschine Mk3 on the desk plus two keyboards on a double K&M 18810 support at the left:
  • Main controller: NI Maschine Mk3
  • Main keyboard (lower): Komplete Kontrol S61 Mk2
  • Secondary upper: Arturia Keylab 61 MkII
  • Other hardware: Akai S5000
  • Computer: running Cubase 10 Pro, NI Komplete 12, Analog Lab 4, Pianoteq 6 Stage, NI Maschine 2 and some other VSTs

The AN1x will replace the Keylab 61 MkII when I want to play it, there is no other way right now.

I have a fourth synth setup (upper floor, LAB2), which now hosts three keyboards, on a triple K&M 18810 support, currenty used just as an storage location. It hosts, up to down, a Korg Triton Le 76, a Roland D50 and a Roland Fantom G6. If I get that setup operative as a fourth one, I could reorganize synths. BTW, the LAB2 is my synth repair lab.

There is never enough space for all the toys

Jose

(*) According to my wife, that should be enough, as I have only two hands

That's a nice collection you have there. I really like the sound of the AN1x!

I was just considering the Kontrol Mk2 and Keylab MKII the other day, planning on getting a mid-sized controller or synth. How do you like the feel of their keybeds?

As I have both keyboards one over the other, I have been able to directly compare them. For me, the NI has a slightly better action. It is closer to what for me is a reference on synths, the SY77 keyboard (shared with plenty of other units of same period, even not Yamaha)

But there is not a big difference so, depending of what you plan to do, the Arturia could be a better choice. I mean, for NI based software (all the Komplete environment), the NI Kontrol excels. For specific Arturia software (as Analog Lab) and general MIDI use, including most DAWs, the Arturia has the advantage of providing more interesting controls, as the sliders and pads.

This is the reason I have both of them, as they complement each other nicely.

Thanks good to hear another hands on opinion. I'm near to picking up a Novation 61SL MKIII, but am reviewing all my other options before pulling the trigger, stuff with built in sounds, stuff without.

I use Kontakt and Arturia's stuff regularly, so both are possibs, but the built in integration is only a small plus for me as I don't mind setting things up myself.

I'll may wind up with two PLG AN cards someday and even a TG77, since I like to get rack mount if possible.

Do check out the SY77 and AN1x together. They go together like peaches and cream! :)

Thanks for the hint!

Yes, the 4th synth setup could be a synth dream, with the SY77, AN1x and then an extra one... Perhaps the Roland Fantom G6 as a controller for all?
