New 2019 Fantom

Unread post by EXer » Thu Sep 05, 2019 12:57 pm

A competitor for the Montage?

A workstation
- without a big blinking wart in the middle of the panel, but with a "time trip pad" style controller (remember the V-Synth?) on the touch screen
- with multiple synth engines, including virtual analog and V-Piano
- with a fully fledged on-board sequencer in addition to computer integration, which gives its user the choice of how to make music
- with modulation wheels (for a Roland it's worth mentioning!)

I had already posted about this. The problem is what do we call it? If we call it the Roland Fantom that could just as easily refer to the original Fantom or Fantom X. So do we now stick "2019" in front of it? I do wish Roland would sort their naming conventions out.

Our posts crossed. You probably posted while I was typing mine.

Roland simply call it "Fantom" although apparently it does not have much in common with the previous Fantoms, which were hardly more than enhanced JV/XV synths.
_____

From the information already disclosed, that new Fantom looks like a very interesting instrument, and an unexpected surprise (many would have bet that Roland would not issue a high-end synthesizer/workstation after they discontinued the Fantom G).

Let's hope they will also improve the customer support (don't ask Fantom G owners about it!)

It looks absolutely breathtaking! :)

But where do we place it? At the same level as the Montage or higher? Previously, I would have thought the RD-2000 was Roland's equivalent of the Montage.

Well, the Fantom has more synth engines and I do prefer the modelled V-Piano more than the Montage/MODX pianos but not sure we can really directly compare them. Roland has a different sound to Yamaha and of course KORG. So could be the case of liking the features but not the sound(s) or vice versa.

I think we will need to see more of the Fantom and get a feel for what it does and how it does it.

Pricewise though we are looking at some hefty chunks of change!
Fantom 8 at $3,999.99 (£3245), Fantom 7 is $3,599.99 (£2920) and Fantom 6 comes in at $3,299.99 (£2677)

Hence I certainly won't be buying one any time soon! 8O

I've got to tell you, these expensive products are real guardian angels for my bank account. It all works like this:

1. I read/listen to demos of the Fantom/RD-2000/Montage/Kronos etc. I realize I want one badly.
2. I realize I'm never going to spend that much money on anything unless it's a car or a life-saving medical procedure (or roof repairs).
3. I read/listen to demos of all the medium- and low-priced products I previously had my eyes on (MODX, Juno, FA, MX, Krome, etc.).
4. I realize how far they are from the high-end products.
5. I decide I'm not interested in anything below flagship level.
6. Return to 1. :)

Yeah I think you nailed it there Swithin ((i)) ((i)) ((i))

Same situation for me. I have far too many calls upon my meagre finances to even contemplate buying a flagship keyboard from anyone.

Something in the mid-range...perhaps but then I start thinking I can do all that with a controller and some software. I am never going to take the thing outside my house so really buying anything else would be a case of "want" over "need".

So it is wonderful to see Roland come out with what looks to be a great keyboard but as with Montage and Kronos it will remain in the "want" list for a long time to come :violin:

I will probably buy one... In 2029 or so

I got a Fantom G6, which was presented in 2009, in July 2019 for a very reasonable price (around 600€), so I guess in 10 years the new one will have also a reasonable price. My musical level is ages from extracting the value from a G6 so perhaps in 10 years I will be able to get something from a 2019 Fantom

Pianists or aspiring ones are going to love that the 8 comes with that PHA-50 keyboard. And for the first time, a PHA-50 with aftertouch.

Terribly heavy-weight keyboard though.

Not on my list but if Roland comes out with a slimmer keyboard with the PHA-50 aftertouch combo, I'll be reading up all about it.

Love the sounds that I have heard so far but like many it will probably be another 5-10 years before I get my hands on one. Not that I could justify buying something like this. I rarely play anything other than acoustic piano so it would definitely be overkill for me.

Of course that doesn't stop the "want" bug from biting

Perhaps an RD-2000 would come close enough (for someone who plays mainly acoustic piano)? It's still quite expensive, but considerably less than the Fantom.

It looks like a nice middle ground to me alright. It has some useful upfront controls, and costs not much more than an FP-90 which has very limited built in sounds, though it does have speakers. I would've considered it more instead of the FP-90 if the less expensive FP-90 weren't itself a stretch for me $ wise, and I liked the aesthetics. :D

This used to only be a Korg thing. They had the original CX3 last century, and then another CX3 early this century. The Kross was followed by another Kross. There was the Kronos and then another version also called Kronos. Though I suppose it was first most famously and most aggravatingly done by Apple who have had countless models all called iPad, iMac, Macbook, etc. Or maybe we should blame Peter Gabriel for all the albums entitled Peter Gabriel.

As for Roland, if you look at their manual download pages, they made an interesting distinction: The old ones are called Fantom Workstation and the new ones are called Fantom Synthesizer.

In their marketing they call it a "Performance Workstation". Bit of a mouthful. Maybe they should have called it 'Fantom PW' or 'Fantom W' although of course with the Fantom "X" already out there that doesn't make sense.

So I guess we'll just have to go with 'Fantom' then
