Vangelis at his Monster Custom Setup . . . .

Unread post by parametric » Sat Oct 12, 2019 1:23 am

I think this has taken YEARS to devise. It certainly wasn't in existence when we worked on his Albums . . . .

(Heaven and Hell/Mask/1492 - The Conquest of Paradise (Movie))

In addition, there is a wide row of pedals underneath . . .

He also "sampled" us at Abbey Road for 3 Hrs. The most boring session I ever did . . . .

I wonder if those samples live-on inside his system?

There's a very short clip of 1492 right at the end of the vid . . .

It's his modern day CS80 built totally to his own specification.

Vangelis is among my favorites.

First time I became truly aware of his music was BLADERUNNER.
In my opinion and taste, BLADERUNNER is among the most perfectly matched soundtracks to a movie.

Vangelis=genius.

Thanks for sharing the vid. :)

Cosmos was probably also my first introduction to Vangelis, followed by seminal Jon and Vangelis tracks (like “I hear you now”) and of course Blade Runner. What I have always loved about Vangelis is the “organic” feel that he coaxes out of synthetic devices. Genius.

There's a story behind this track . . . . .

It was the first session we did for Vangelis IIRC, and was (I think) the first I did with the ECC . . .

It was recorded at Vangelis' NEMO Studios near Marble Arch in London . . . . (I actually sat on that sofa . . )

Not only did we sing on "Heaven and Hell", but Vangelis had imported a veritable "sea" of Timps into the Studio, which we had to

beat "in time" on a few tracks . . . .

"So Long Ago - So Clear" was the last track we recorded and the Session was running out of time . . .

We sang the track through - for levels - and then the "Equity" membership of our number, put their heads together and demanded

an extra 1/2-session "fee" to continue . . . .

Vangelis' record company (RCA?) declined to pay - and the Equity members "Walked" . . . . .

What we weren't aware of was that the "run-through" had been recorded - and after a dose of reverb - THAT is what you hear

on the Album. Not a bad result . . . and we subsequently performed H&H at the RAH . . . . .

Sadly, "So Long Ago - So Clear" was scratched from the Playlist as Jon couldn't appear due to "Contractual Difficulties"

Meantime, WE were all kitted out with Long White Robes and given 6' RED Poles that we had to beat in time on certain tracks

Here's a rather bad pic from the dress-rehearsal on the day . . . .

In true "Nothing Happens 'til it's Happening" style that's all too familiar in the Music Business - We were handed Music that we'd never

seen before as we walked on-stage - which was to replace Jon's track . . . . :o

Ho Hum . . . . .
