GAS Attack - Sequential Prophet X

Unread post by Derek » Thu Nov 07, 2019 9:56 pm

To complement my Montage and Kronos, I decided to go for one last synth, a decent analog or hybrid analog, and I ended up with this.

Why? I have a project coming up where I needed a decent analog synth with a VCF that can self oscillate and which you can modulate to create the sort of sound effects you hear in Jarre and psychedelic music such as Gong or Ozic Tentacles. That and it's two years since I brought a synth ;)

I really mean this to be my last one, so I decided it had better be a good one (I probably do not believe myself either!!! 8O 8O ).

I was looking at a Novation Summit in the sub £2,000 price range, but it is selling like hot cakes in the UK with very limited stock as it keeps selling out and I couldn't find anybody with it in stock. So I started looking at other choices, including Sequential, and found by chance that BAX-Shop where heavily discounting the Prophet X, down by over £1,000 to £2,400, so I decided to seriously look at it at that price (there was no way I would pay the RRP). It was a little out of my target budget, but when I make purchases like these I am in it for the long run (at least 10 years), so will stretch out if something is worth it. To be honest it was really hard finding a video/sound demo that made me go totally wow, but finally found one focusing on ambient sounds, which coupled with the very positive Sound on Sound review, made me decide to take a punt on it and order one unseen/undemoed (as BAXSHOP have a good returns policy). And they had other Prophet Models were on sale with similar discounting

So the other dilemma of course was which Prophet, but in the end I decided that the X better suited my needs, as you not only get an excellent Analog Hybrid, but it is the first Sequential synth to be able to process samples (well, since the short lived Prophet 2000). It is not meant to be a ROMPLER replacement, but the samples are there for raw material for analog synth sound treatment. And of course you can put in single cycle waveforms for a four oscillator monster. In the sample set built in (150GB worth uncompressed) you get the Prophet VS waveforms.

I have spent most of the last few days getting it setup into the studio, getting the OS updated, programming my first sound (a signature sound from my AN1x that I use a lot), and figuring out the really arcane user sample structure.

The only downside so far is that the Prophet has had to displace my beloved AN1x in the studio ( I have space for 4 boards) until I sort something out for it. I don't use the AN1x too much these days, only for certain sounds, but I will never part with it, as, even 20 years on, it is an amazing sounding VA.

But the Prophet sounds gorgeous, and build quality is superb (as it should be at the price). I really intend to get to know this one inside out.

Beautiful bit of kit there Derek. I can see why you bought it. Just been looking at a few reviews and although as you said there isn't much out there that does it justice you do get an inkling of just how powerful this keyboard can be.

We don't see much about Dave Smith and Sequential on this forum so it's great to know we might be hearing a lot more in the future (Y)

Thanks, guys.

Yeah, it sure scratched a serious itch that I had! Ski at EX5Tech was trying to get Jim and I to succumb to Dave Smith's Instruments/Sequential for a long time, as he was patch programming for Dave Smith when Dave started up again. So it's taken a while....

As I said, I would not have paid at the RRP price, and was quite staggered when I saw BAX Shop discounting a 10 month old product so much. Most places are still selling it at RRP. When I placed the order they had four in stock at this price, now there is just one.

Hopefully I'll have time over the next week to start programming it. The key benefit as well as that gorgeous Sequential Prophet filter sound (this one is based on the chip used in the REV1/REV2 Prophet 5s which aficionados reckoned sounded better than the REV3) is the one knob per function, which makes it so much more immediate compared to diving around a touch screen or a computer GUI.
