Trying to ID model of early 80s electric from photo

Unread post by jcolpean » Mon Dec 02, 2019 1:01 pm

I learned to to in the early 80s alongside a dear friend that past away back in 1995. He played a red Yahamaha strat that I remember fondly. In fact, really on the lookout for a used one as just the site of it has some deep meaning for me. He would have originally purchased this in the USA about 1982.
I've found a couple images/youtube that appear to be the model and color.

These guys list this as a Yamaha SS 300 but Ive not been able to confirm it in any old catalogs:

Looks like this one on Reverb....

The system will not let me post the URL. Just paste that into Reverb . com search engine.

There are several on EBAY including a RED one !

Hope that helps.

Thats a SC 300. I had a red one that I bought and sold this year to get a SC1200. Nice guitars for the price.

You can paste a url Ed but remove the http/www from the beginning so that it is not a clickable hyperlink. People can still copy and paste into their browser (Y)

Indeed a SC300T in "Candy Tone Red"

BTW: Good to see on the SC300T in this post that on these 80'ies Yamaha's the pu-covers )and sometimes the knobs) get very yellow over the years, and the pickguards don't.

That is a super series of guitars. I have/had an SC400 with fixed bridge. It is/was one of my absolute favourites. Rich tone, easy fingerboard, light weight, loud for single coils. My 10 year old grandson picked it up one day recently and that was that. He has been inseparable from it. So I gave him it like the big softy I am. The body shape really works for a small player like that tho he finds it easiest with a capo at 3rd fret. It had its first public appearance for a while on Saturday at his music school workshop. Great tone.

A great guitar for a youngster who can see past making metal noises.

Me wrong.... possibly :/:

There was an almost identical SS300, but with an slightly different bridge. Becourse the guy on the first pic is having his hand before the bridge you can't tell for sure it's a SC300T or SS300.

There is no SC300T in the old Japanese guitarchive, but there is a SS300 (only SS though). Often an indication that the SC300T was only for export. Yamaha did sometimes use different names for the same guitar (f.i SG and SBG). But these two have different bridges. Perhaps the SS300 was a short lived Japan market guitar (production started sept 82 and ended 1983), then with an altered bridge became the export model SC300T.

The SC300T is presented in the 1983 US catalog as having a "New original Yamaha Tremelo unit for smooth tremelo and stable tuning". The bridge of the SS300 looks like an imitation strat type tremelo.

You cant see the bridge or the end of the trem arm which are the differences in appearance of 2 very similar guitars
