Music notation software has always been one of those things that is both hard to get right and usually expensive to buy. The market is not exactly flooded with options.

So it is extremely good news to see that Steinberg has stepped up and given us a free version of their Dorico music notation software!

The free version is called Dorico SE.

Key features

• The same beautiful automatic engraving as Dorico Pro
• Easy note input using mouse, computer keyboard or MIDI keyboard
• Intelligently adjusts notation as you write
• Any number of movements or pieces in a single project
• Automatic layout of instrumental parts
• Stunning playback — HALion Sonic SE 3 and hundreds of sounds included
• Supports VST 3 virtual instruments and effects processors (30 included)
• Sequencer-style piano roll MIDI editor
• Sophisticated chord symbols, unpitched percussion and drum set notation
• Unbarred music, tuplets across barlines, microtonality, etc. all handled correctly — no workarounds
• Transfer to and from other programs via MusicXML, MIDI, PDF, etc.

Another plus is that if you like the free version and want to upgrade to the paid version you get "preferential pricing".

Full Story Here.

Same here Jose although I do have the full version I have never actually used it. The main reason for that is there is no function to transcribe guitar via midi. Actually I am not sure if any notation software does that? Until it does it is not really that useful for me.

Ah, you beat me to it, but I thought you might! ;)

I just had the email myself, and it is quite a generous offer. I guess they want to get people started on it, so when they need more, they are used to the workflow and have made the time investment that makes them likely to upgrade.

Yes, I also think that is the way they work but, really, can't blame them for that!. As a sample, I began with Cubase Elements 9 (not free, but very affordable) and now I am on Cubase Pro 10.5 . Kudos for their marketing!

By now I have just loaded some demo files and played around. Once I get into more detailed work, I will let you know. So far, I like it!

Have grabbed it whilst available and downloaded and installed it on the Mac to take a look some time. Not sure if I will ever use it, mind. But you never know.

My main notating I usually do is guitar tabulate to notate my own songs. One draw back of a guitar is you cannot capture MIDI (well, not most guitars) into a DAW to catch what you played. So I usually don't bother notating my keyboard parts, as I can always go back and look at the piano roll, and Chord track notes in Cubase. I learnt a long time ago to notate my guitar parts before I forget them!

Yeah - interesting Derek . . . .

I'm not sure where Guitar-midi IS ATM . . . .

I remember years ago, Casio made a midi Guitar - looked like a SG IIRC

There was also a Roland midi guitar strange thing with the Head joined to the body with a "spar" for want of a

better word . .

I would guess that the instantaneous pitch detection required - not to say the string bending - would be well within

the capabilities of todays processing power . . . .

I suppose the manufacturers have to see a need before much is going to happen?

As to notation - well . . . . If you're going to want others to play your Music, then Score is the fast-track way.

Of course, it requires that all concerned can READ Music  which is NOT always a given . . . .

I'm not saying that stuff cannot be learned in a rehearsal or "Show me how it goes" situation, but THAT usually takes

LONG TIMES - and NOT really an option in a recording session - or even a performance.

Most shows I've done either had ONE (ON the day) rehearsal, or in fact NONE (Costs are usually too high)

The numerous sessions I've done over the Years for Rick and Others have ALL arrived as Score . . . . . .

Last time I checked - Vangelis doesn't read or write Score, so on those Albums I did, (Heaven and Hell/Mask/1492)

the parts were transcribed by Guy from hours of cassette tapes recorded from the desk . . . .

Which is a formidable skill in itself. :o

When it came to the re-recording of the extended "Arthur" - the original orchestral conductor score had been lost

back in 1975, and Guy and Ann re-created it from the early recording - and from MY Piano-Reduction score that I

had bought back in the day . . . . I still have it . . .

The NEW additions weren't a problem, Rick DOES write score - and Guy and Ann helped out too IIRC.

I DON'T actually use notation for my own stuff - as I never envisage it ever being performed (except by me possibly)

More true, is probably that I'm too Lazy to do it   not to say doubtful of my own ability to get it right

In any case - it's been a while - so I might check out the FREE Dorico (although I have the more serious one), as the

free one might give a gentler introduction . . .

It's always good to have free software, so I'll download it.

For the time being I keep using lilypond, now that I have overcome its learning curve.

I like the idea of free software but not sure I like the look of these installation T&C's.

Steinberg Dorico Install.png

Do they seem a little too intrusive for a simple install or am I just getting a bit paranoid these days?

They do indeed seem initially overly intrusive but I am guessing there are plenty of other software vendors that have similar T&C's just that most people don't read them.

It is not clear if they are talking about seeing what other Steinberg products you have installed or other products in general so they need to amend that.

Download utilities used? Most people just download direct these days so this could be something left from years back.

Free disk space? They would need to check that to make sure you have enough space to install and run the program.

The rest is just stats that all companies use so adjust their marketing etc.
