Korg Nautilus Noisy Keys Fix

Unread post by Saul »

I have been searching the web for information on this noisy key issue that affects the Korg Nautilus. All I could find were complaints about the issue but no mention of a fix. Apparently, it also affects the KRONOS as they both use the same keybed. Someone also mentioned that the PA5x has the same issue!

Of course, we know all about noisy keys on this forum. The MODX8 in particular was affected by a similar issue, although the fix for that was not as straightforward.

Thankfully the Nautilus is very easy to work on. Just remove the bottom center plate and you have full access to everything.

The problem is simply to do with how the springs sit under the keys. They rest on bare metal and this is where the issue arises. If the spring does not quite sit square against the metal it causes a scraping sound when the key is depressed. And this is amplified by all the space within the casing. So it is just a matter of moving the spring so that it sits correctly and, problem sorted 👍

The problem only seems to affect the black keys.

I was going to post all this on the KORG forum but it is running such an outdated version of phpbb that it is impossible to attach any photos. I am surprised it has not been hacked to death by now!

Hello Saul, Thank you for your post on the Nautilus issue of noisy keys- in particular, squeaky black keys. I have 8 squeakers. Would you kindly explain in detail how to remove the bottom center plate? Perhaps you could include a photo. There are a lot of screws under there. Must they all be removed? I have not done much in the way of repairing my keyboards, although in the past I did work on my 2 Korg Triton Pros. Thanks in advance for your assistance. I really want to insure my Nautilus stays in service after I open it, tweak the springs, and close it back up.

I can't remember exactly how many screws there were but I do think I removed all of them around that centre panel. I did take a load of photos which I will post in the morning. That might help👍

This is the same issue in m-audio's keystation pro 88, with the same squeaky noises, in 2/3rds of the keybed.
Not restricted to the black keys. Easily fixable, I haven't thought of starting it yet and tackling other minor issues.
I put up with until I can psyche myself up enough to dive in

This Squeeky key issue seems to affect quite a few keyboards. My Nektar Impact GXP49 also has it. It is the springs sitting directly on the metal frame which causes it. They should sit on some sort of plastic base but cost cutting means that these refinement are not generally used. It is incredibly irritating for anyone who uses a keyboard in a home studio environment. For gigging musicians it is probably not an issue as you generally won't hear it on stage.

Saul, Thank you so much for your directions and posting the photos. Now I believe it is very straightforward and I feel confident I can do it.
I really appreciate not having to take the Nautilus into the shop. -Tessalin

I am glad the images could be of some use. I wish I had taken some of me actually removing the bottom plate but it is just that plate and the screws around the edge of it that need to be removed 👍
