Wow - mine was already socketed! What serial number is your DX7? Perhaps it's an early model?

That's the right way you should go - makes a swap easier should the need arise. (Y)

The serial number on mine is illegible, but based on chip date codes, my guess is later half of 1987.

Where can I get an upgrade chip?? I currently have a DX7II. Just sort of re-discovering it, and would appreciate any resources, suggestions or mod ideas anyone can pass along.
Thanks!!!

For the DX7II, i think your only upgrade option is E! (for the DX7ii). They are on eBay now and then.

Can I throw my name in for a DX7-IID system firmware .bin? I have v1.3 and I need some test routines to confirm the cartridge design I'm working on is real.

Will do! (the first one just failed, so it's time to try again and/or hope that once I get my EPROM burner I can ask the new 1.9 system software to tell me why my cart is bad). Still burning money on the prototypes so I hope I get something working soon!

Hi! Finally, an EPROM for dx7iifd was delivered and my friend has burned it successfully with 1.9 bin (thanks again, Miks!). Went through some strange symbols before I've got full working synth.

Okay, I got a dx7 ii FD, with FW 1.6... I also have grey matter E! Installed. How do I go about updating my firmware if the GME! Piggy banked and replaced my original IC's...!?

I think it's one or the other. The E! has it's own firmware that replaces the Yamaha one. Now whether or not your E! is up to the latest they released, ... that's another matter. Which version does your DX7 say it is?

Would it be possible for someone out there to send me a programmed EEPROM with the latest firmware? I don't have any way to program a chip myself. I just got a DX7IIFD and I'm really digging it, but I discovered the firmware is v. 1.1. Of course, I'd be willing to send some $ your way.

so i have the dx 7 11fd with a grey matter E board already installed . the firmware is however 1.2. i wanted to upgrade to 1.9 . so i got the burnt eprom with socket holder . when i opened up the keyboard found out that the ic23 as shown in your picture above is where they have placed on of the socket from the grey matter e board. I got this keyboard second hand and i dont know who the previuos owner was. So the question is can i desolder the e board socket , then place the v1.9 ic back into ic23 start the keyboard to see if it will install the version 1.9 ? , and if it does, the take out back the version 1.9 socket and replace the e board socket restart keyboard hoping it will still read version 1.9?
the premise for this is the fact that the keyboard is still reading vwersion 1.2 although it has no ic there with the operating system version, only the eboard cable.
