Saul, another moving post, and you are quite right, the pain of their passing is outweighed by the pleasure and company that they provide (I could do without the presents though).

Our current stupid Tom has been with us since 2009 and we cannot imagine life without him and his silly little rituals. Like when he wants fuss, he will go around the nest of tables, waits for our attention and wants to run and sit on my computer chair (which he doesn't do when I am away!), after fuss on the chair, you put in on his blanket and he sucks/laps the tip of his tail (which is now a shade of brown instead of black!). Never seen a cat do that before. He will also jump on our bed at three in the morning, purring his head off to do the same. Hopefully he has quite a few years left in him, but we were really worried when he got into that scrap a month ago and came off the worst. He was really ill due to the bites and abscesses he had as a result. He is back to normal now.

We lost his sister a few months after they were let out for the first time. Really annoying as we live on a small side road and somebody knocked her down and just left her there - we hope it wasn't out of callousness, but because they did not see her. Her silly habit was "catching" and bringing leaves in instead of mice - it was autumn at the time they were first let out, so any leaves in the house bring back memories of her. She also had a thing for my guitar picks, and occasionally we still find the odd one squirrelled away when we move a piece of furniture!

We then had a replacement cat from the RSPCA - a thin black cat (very few people will take black cats!) who was really timid. Was crazy for cheese especially when I was making my lunch for work in the morning before leaving home. My daughter named her Tinkerbell. You don't realise what a daft name it was until when you had to go looking for her in the street and calling for her - she went missing and we never found her. So you just hope she is alive somewhere.

We then got two replacements for her again from the RSCA (another black cat and a long haired grey), and lost both of them. Both were also timid cats who must have had some trauma at their first homes as they didn't like sudden moves. One was a another thin black cat that a neighbour found in the road one day. She had had some major trauma - the vet was sure it was not a car due to the type of injury - possibly a kick from a cow or a horse, and when they opened her to operate, they advised it would be kinder to put her asleep whilst under the anaesthetic, as she the major trauma to her rear muscles could not be repaired - they could not reattach the detached muscles to what was left. That left her sister, whose silly habit was trying to pounce on the DVD/Blu-Ray tray when it was opening and closing. We lost her in another road accident - so even quiet roads country roads are not safe for cats. They have no road sense and to be fair to the drivers on the road, whilst we do have some speed idiots who go down them too fast (esp with children playing further down), if a cat leaps out of a banked hedgerow to run across the road, you will have little time to react and not much room to swerve as it is single track.

So, I miscounted above, we have lost four in about seven years. After losing the last one, I decided no more for a while. I couldn't keep going through that!

Having said that, I value the time we had with all of them.
Regards
Derek Cook

That '83 picture reminds of a picture of one of our cats over a Commodore Amiga 1040S monitor. The posture is nearly identical. :)

I saw this thread and thought I would join in.
Firstly: Miks. I am very sorry for your loss. We lost our dog "Floyd" to the same.
Since then my wife decided she wanted a cat so we bought a pedigree Burmilla female that we call Roxy. I have never been much of a cat person but this cat has turned my attitude towards cats. Yes she stinks the house out and is the greediest living thing I have encountered, but she is a lovely little thing.

Just love cats! Endlessly entertaining, smart, independent, the perfect pet in fact. Wouldn't have any where we live right now though. Too many idiots driving around using the roads like a race track. Hopefully move somewhere quieter soon and then we will definitely be getting at least two cats :)

RiP Poker Attfield 2004-2018
PA260013.jpg
Birthed by myself 14 years ago, Poker had to leave us yesterday due to an inoperable tumour. We thank her for all the years of companionship she has given us, not to mention allowing us to live in her house as long as we kept it clean and tidy and stocked with food and treats (and some for us). For the first time in over 40 years we are without a four-legged companion and it is very strange. I suspect that this will not be for long.

That's so sad Jim. We always know they will go eventually of course but it doesn't make it any easier when the time comes :(

A friend of ours just lost her cat Mumu. It always seemed like she would never die, she was so healthy and fit for a cat of her age. I think she must have been 19 or 20 when she passed on. Luckily our friend is an artist and there is quite a legacy of Mumu all over the world :)
