DX7 Supplemental Booklets Online Archive

Unread post by rawl747 »

UPDATED 22JAN2018

I am also pleased to announce the availability of 22 DX7 Supplemental & Voice Data Demosoft Booklets from Yamaha. These are the 20 Original Supplementals plus 2 Voice Data Demosoft Booklets (the latter 2 are for use of the WX7 MIDI Windcontroller with DX series FM Tone Generators) that I am aware of with the first couple applying to early DX7 models but most of these including all of the 17 uploaded focus on the DX7II FD/D models and several detail micro tonality and micro tuning issues. All (IMHO) are of interest to the Yamaha FM community.

The 2 WX7 Wind Controller booklets may also help with other MIDI CC#02 applications. There are voices referenced in these 2 Voice Data Demosoft booklets that would be great to have but as of today (29FEB24), I have not seen these available in any format. If anyone has access to them, please send me a PM.

This is the list of all 22 Booklets with download links.

(29FEB24) - We just received the last 3 missing Supplemental Booklets plus the 2 Voice Data Demosoft Booklets courtesy of member Sockmonkey. Thank you for providing the missing 3 Booklets and the 2 Voice Data Demosoft booklets.

So, if anyone out there copies of the sound Bank.Voice data in any format, please contact me via PM or a post on this topic.

Thank you to Daniel Forró and Kaizendave for scanning the original 17 Booklets and sending them via FTP to me so I could convert them to PDF with OCR'd text. Half-tone pictures have been scanned in 300 DPI gray-scale and added onto otherwise 300 DPI black & white scanned pages using Adobe Photoshop CS6.

I hope you all get some interesting and enlightening reading from this antique material.

Cheers,
Rawl

I'm searching for more information about my dx7fd. The Yamaha Aftertouch magazines seem pretty useless, so all my hopes are on these Supplemental booklets...

Can You please update the link? I't doesn't work anymore.

Deiks7,

I am sorry that you did not find the Aftertouch magazines to be of much value to you regarding your DX7FD. They were never intended to be a subsitute for more detailed information provided in the original manual or the supplements. I am not sure what you are looking for but even the original manuals from this era were often difficult and confusing to many. That is perhaps one of the reasons why so many third party books were written and published for the DX7 and related FM synthesis products from Yamaha.

It is my understanding that when Saul (forum owner) moved the site to the current site hosting software platform, the downloads section required manual recreation and much of the old content is still in the process of being re-uploaded by Saul. Plus, the new site base platform does not lend itself to the sort of hierarchical storage and display approach we enjoyed on the old platform for a downloads section. Saul mentioned in another topic that he is currently looking for an add-on module to provide this improved functionality but found many to be much too expensive for what is essentially a free service. He said that he is still looking.

Regarding the supplements, I can search my archives to see if I have the original digital copies of the ones previously uploaded (as listed above) in my collaboration with Daniel Forro. If I can find them then I will see about making them available to you. As of this last post above, Daniel and I were still searching for print or digital copies of the ones listed as still needed. So IF ANYONE following this thread has one of these PLEASE contact either me or Daniel.

Cheers,
Rawl

I see these links have been moved to / reincarnated in a thread in the Downloads section for the DX7.

It's called DX7 Supplemental Booklets download links, in Yamaha DX7 Downloads (from the main board index).

I don't own a DX7, but I do own a TX7 so I expect a lot of it will be useful information for me. Thanks, Rawl :)

Thanks Andy,

So everyone is clear about these supplements and the links to them, they are currently residing on a directory on my company web site. I am hoping that Saul will at some point in the near future upload them to the DX7 Downloads area of this (his) site.

I can't make any guarantees as to how long they will be available for download from their present location and I provided the links as a temporary band aid until Saul can upload them to this site.

So, enjoy for now!
Cheers,
Rawl

I may be able to borrow original printed copies of three of the missing booklets if there is still interest in scanning them.

I am referring to the "Quick Reference Guide", "Memory Management", and "Modifying Preset Voices" booklets.

Please let me know if these are still needed.

Hi,

I think the interest would be there for completeness, if you would be so kind to scan.

Kaizendave,

I would be glad to provide you with a dropbox link or ftp login via PM to upload jpeg or tiff images to. I will then create an "optimized for web"e PDF of each one like I did for the others and the Aftertouch magzines. If there are no gray-scale pictures, please scan as black & white at 300 dpi.

just let me know and I will shoot you a PM.

I will be scanning using a HP OfficeJet L7780 All-In-One unit. Because the cover on this unit lifts sideways along the long edge, it may be necessary for me to alternate each page between right-side-up and upside-down to avoid damaging the pages of the booklet. Can you work with that?

Sure. I use Adobe's Acrobat Pro and can easily rotate any page or as you are describing alternating pages.

If these are relatively small (number of page) booklets with a set of 2 or 3 staples in the "spine", it might be much easier to carefully remove the staples by bending open the 2 ends of each staple (setting them aside for later re-insertion), separating the pages and then folding them as needed to expose each page as you scan. That is how I did all the AfterTouch magazine issues. When finished, I just reassembled the pages and re-inserted the original staples back into their holes and folded the ends back down.

But I can certainly do rotations or even reorder the pages back into the proper order inside Acrobat as long as each page has a page number.

Did you want to upload to my FTP site or use a dropbox link?

Thanks,
Rawl

Why not just upload them to the forum? That's what the downloads section is for. Simply make a post and attach the files.
