I smiled when I read this :
MONTAGE still utilizes the same action that our artists and musicians love and have commented on from the MOTIF XS and XF: FSX on the MONTAGE6 and 7 and Balanced Hammer (BH) on the MONTAGE8. These remained the same because time and time again our artists and customers have commented on how much they love the FEEL of the MOTIF
As someone who is definitely a bit of an old cynic I read that more as "If we use the same keybed as in the Motif we save a fortune developing a new one and hence increase the bottom line" :)
I have to disagree. They kept the FSX keybed of the Motif XS/XF not to save development costs (for once), but because it *really* is a good keybed. As I said before, it's a ROHS compliant version of the excellent FS keybed you can find on the EX5, SY99, Motif/ES and Korg Trinity, Triton, Oasys76 (unfortunately not on the Kronos).

The FSX keybed gives the player almost the same feeling as the FS keybed:
EXer wrote:I really like the feeling of that [FS] keyboard: when you depress a key you have to overcome a certain resistance first, then it becomes lighter, giving the sensation of "throwing" the key, a bit like on a piano. That's a very pleasant sensation, very different from the "springy" sensation of ordinary synth keyboards on which the resistance is simply proportional to the depressing of the key.

Well you can agree or disagree but the "fact" remains they didn't have to develop a new keybed and therefore saved a fortune in costs so their bottom line is improved into the bargain.

Whilst that may be the case i.e. £££ -> profit, it could be that they've spent some or even all  of that saving on other aspects of the Montage. ;) You've tried it, so how does the overall build and operational quality compare against others? In the dev video they seemed to be very keen on the quality, appearance and feel of things.

Long Gone: Far too much gear from the 80's and 90's that went out the door for £££! Moved to soft synth city instead.

It's well built. It has a metal case and all the controls feel of very good quality so I would not say they have cut any corners there. Likewise the screen is nice and very responsive to the touch. I preferred the keys on the Montage 6 & 7 and again they don't feel cheap in any way.

I'm not knocking the Montage in any way, simply stating that the "marketing" reasons given for doing something i.e because it's all about the customer are not always the real reasons why companies do things. Real world economics I suppose.

My interest is in what replaces the MOXF though :)

Agreed - like Yamaha saying that RCM was not included because it can give chaotic results - that is true of a lot of synthesis features. Spin is alive and well..... ;)

Not sure if this was covered, but, how do you get the montage arpeggios to sync (tempo) in logic pro x, including start and stop. Back info, I am also a a motif xf owner, and am able to get it to sync easily. I have tried to set it to receive external clock source, and sadly have had no luck. Any help would be great ly appreciated.

Hi flyskate. I don't have a Montage anymore as it was on loan from Yamaha but Derek has just purchased one to add to his live rig so he may be able to answer your questions. I'm sure he will be along soon :)

Hi,

As it happens on the weekend I was messing with getting the Montage synced to Cubase, so same principle assuming you have MIDI Clock being sent.

In the UTILITY MODE, Settings/MIDI IO Page I had to set the MIDI IN/OUT setting to match my MIDI port (MIDI or USB), and MIDI Sync had to set to MIDI.

That worked for me. I even got the Motion Sequence synced as well, which was some specific voice editing.

How do you turn off the metronome click when recording on Yamaha Montage?

See page 181 of the Reference Manual. The Mode (Click Mode) setting lets you turn the metronome Off if you wish, or you can use the Volume (click Volume) setting to turn down the metronome's sound so it's quieter.
