SY99 Presets to SY77?

Yamaha SY77 is a 16 voice multitimbral music workstation first produced by Yamaha Corporation in 1989. The SY77 is a synthesizer whose architecture combines AFM (Advanced Frequency Modulation) synthesis, AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) for ROM-borne sample-based synthesis, and the combination of these two methods christened Realtime Convolution and Modulation Synthesis (RCM).

That will be on account of SY Manager being an editor as well. sy.factory is not an editor. :)

That sounds like expected behaviour then, not a forum error, unless Sonus has not disabled the reception of private messages.

Derek, I hope you didn't take any offense to my post. I love your librarians and I actually was not speaking of editing features at all. Your sy.factory does not allow me to natively see the Yamaha SY99 presets in depth. I can "View SY99 Synthesizer Data" but I cannot click on a sound and see it's elements and effects like I can with your ex.factory. And sadly, I still have not found the SY99 presets/SY99 synth all file online.

The SY Manager however comes with the Best of DX library, the Best of PD Library and both the '77 & '99 factory presets. Allowing me to see all of the SY99's internal presets to check if the patch I want from the SY99 has the same waveforms as the SY77. Thats all I meant. :)

The SY99 when loading an SY77 sound will map any AWM elements to map to the new Wave ROM. The challenge would be going back the other way, especially if an AWM sample is used on the 99 that is not present on the SY99.

I checked my library in sy.factory and I have a few different copies of the NiteHwks EP, including one for the SY77. It is a "2 AFM" poly voice, so FM only.

If you wish, later on I will check out this patch on my SY99 and TG77 and tell you how close they are.

Thanks for the comments on ex.factory :)

Hi guys. I received my SY77! After listening to a video (with direct audio thank God) that showcased the NiteHwk EP, I have tweaked the SY77 to match the SY99's NiteHwk by about 99%! Check out the audio demo! Thanks for all of your help guys!

Hi there!

Before opening a new thread, i thought its better to add a question regarding the SY99->SY77 patches here.

I recently got a SY77 and also love some of the sy99 ones and thought i might
could get them half way working in the SY77 (btw, cheers for the waveform list).

Unfortunately my favorite ones are in the preset banks 1&2 and so far i was only able to
find the internal(factory) patches.
Are these avalable somewhere?

greetings from Germany,
Dirk

Hi there!

The software I use to edit and send patches to my SY77 is called: SY Manager. I love it because it includes both the SY77 and SY99 factory patches, over 1000 DX7 to SY format patches (I was literally scrolling for hours), Yamaha PD sounds library and more.

I highly recommend you get SY Manager or sy.factory by Derek cook because you cannot simply load an SY99 file into an SY77 (from what the SY Manager told me). The SY Manager software allowed me to convert SY99 patches to the SY77 format however, all of the effects were turned off since the SY77's effects differ greatly from the SY99. Plus, pretty much all factory patches except full blown AFM sounds use waveforms that the SY77 does not have. I was only able to convert 4 SY99 AFM electric pianos and one Synth Pad (Alaska). Thankfully that one Synth Pad used a waveform that the SY77 had. Other than that, you will be sad to know that most of the SY99's factory presets use waveforms that the SY77 is without.

Which is understandable, as Yamaha wanted to definitely put there new and improved waveforms at the forefront of the SY99. I am not a hardware fanboy and I can and will say that a good bit of the SY77's waveforms are absolutely terrible. The strings (and the looping it employs) are some of worst I've ever heard. And the pianos on the '77 are without expression and color. But I digress.

If the SY Manager would allow me to save the included SY99 Factory presets in the "t01/j01" or whatever SY77 format then I would of attached it to this post. Sadly (for this case), the SY Manager uses it's own proprietary format called .SYM.
Not much you can do with that without the SY Manager. But $25 for the program and all of the patches I talked about it included is not bad.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for this Sonus. Don't know why the SY Manager does not allow me to save in the SY77's native format. It always makes me save to it's .SYM proprietary format.

Cueball, just remember what I said about the missing waveforms. Don't be surprised to hear a Triangle Waveform in alot of the SY99 patches you pull up.

Cheers mate, also for the waveform comparison list.

I know a lot of waves are missing and the list will be helpfull to get somewhere in the right direction.

Now hopefully the new display will arrive soon, though i'm a bit afraid pulling the S77 apart.....
On the TG77 where i changed it a few years ago it was -much- easier.

Thanks everyone!

Pulling it apart is the easy bit. :D My guides on my x.factory site show you how do it, and of course take lots of pictures for reference.

Wow,just wow! I found that SY99 factory presets sounds way better then on SY77,even TG77 have better imho.
Thanks for that I enjoyed very much ecently exploring the sounds.

The only question I would have is can you find time to dump 99to77 with FX turned on please?
