Re-recording "Supertzar" (Black Sabbath) at British Grove Studios

Unread post by parametric » Mon Mar 06, 2017 2:32 am

This session had an interesting twist to it.

The driving force is this man: http://emeraldsabbath.com/ - who was our "Client", and I met at the session.

I had not heard of Emerald Sabbath before, but a quick look at the contributers to the project, lists some SERIOUS talent.

I won't go into a long description here, as it is all on the above link.

British Grove Studios (owned by Mark Knopfler) is a lovely space, and a delight to work in. I'm told by a relation who works for them,

that the Stones recorded their recent "Blue and Lonesome" Album there, back in December . . .

The recording went well, intended to be a duplicate of the original (so I understand).

The original was recorded without any click-track and there were a few timing idiosyncrasies which were ironed out with a manually

applied click-track to guide us in some sections.

The pic. below shows Mike - who you'll recognise from the link above, together with Guy and Ann Prothero, Myself and David Roy -

the point being that we were on the original 1975 recording of Supertzar at Morgan Studios . . .

Looking at all this,Chris, which I find of great interest , thank you, I was suddenly struck by the thought,
"I wonder whether any of the popular music of today will see the great resurgence in recreating performances of the past?"
Somehow I doubt it, but then I'm so totally out of touch with 99% of what's going on "with the in crowd" of today.
To me at least, there seemed to be more substance in a lot of what was being created fifty years ago.

Then again, maybe it's just a sign that I'm OLD!

Well John,

I guess it's a kind of "Circle of Life" - which is happening for us ATM with the tracks we thought were great, getting a make-over

and re-issue.

I daresay the youngsters of today will also look back in 50 years and have the same fond recollections of their favourites -

and who knows what sort of reincarnation that would be? Personally, I can't imagine what form it would take . . . .

(NOW , who's sounding "Old""?)

There certainly seems to be a "movement" towards "Orchestral" LIVE shows of all sorts happening recently.

The stuff I've done recently with the ECC - "Gladiator" - Live to projection, "Skyrim" - Live to projection,

Procol Harem - with Choir and Orchestra, and (well) Wakeman is just Wakeman - doing what he does.

Although there is a resurgence of interest in VINYL - supported by an impetus in sales of turntables, I think record companies

are struggling with the realisation that there isn't much money to be made from sales of records and CDs.

Personally - I DON'T care for the Download "culture" very much. I only did this ONCE - because I COULDN'T buy the CD . . .

You could make a PRESENT of an Album or a CD - and GIVE it to someone. It had Artwork, details, Lyrics that could be

enjoyed WITH/DURING the Music.

A downloaded file is just that. Rather a damp Squibb - IMO.

SACD largely flopped, as did DVD-Audio . . . Technically WONDERFUL, but only really of benefit to dogs or the occasional passing Bat

So these LIVE shows seem to be the answer - and in my small experience of the phenomena - Audiences seem to LOVE them . . . .

Perhaps there's a realisation that the sound of an Orchestra in full flow - is actually rather fantastic - AND there's a lot to look at TOO -

not just a pair of speakers . . .

So - if you are a singer or a player - it looks like there's going to be a lot of work about . . . .

I have it on good authority that there is some "Harry Potter" on the Horizon - but apparently it's going to be "girls only"

As a Postscript, Mike gave his consent to me uploading this promo Vid of the Emerald Sabbath project . . .

There is one brief clip of us in the Studio at British Grove, and a few of us listening back in the Control room (I'm in neither . .)

The Supertzar session is largely what you can hear playing in the background . . .

Mike is not a fan of YT, so I would have to upload it here . . . .

(just tried .mp4 not allowed - plus its 650Mb - is this too much Saul?)

Yeah 650mb is too large for the php upload limit on the server. You should however be able to upload it via ftp and link to it. Would be a LOT easier to upload to YouTube or Vimeo though. Does Mike know you can make a youtube channel private? So only the people you want to view it can see it. Would be the same as uploading here only people just browsing YT would not be able to see it.

Thanks for that Saul . .

I just spoke to Mike and he's now up for a YT Channel, so I'll let him sort that - then I should be able to embed a video as per normal . .

He just sent me some more stuff from that session including a vid of the whole take of the track filmed IN the Studio, and another

of us listening back in the control room . . .

Both He and Guy tell me that there is a likelyhood of further work in connection with either Green Sabbath

Or even Black Sabbath . . .

Time will tell.

Following the Release of EmeraldSabbath, Mike hopes that a Live performance in Birmingham might be possible . . . .

To our collective knowledge, "SuperTzar" has never been done live with a Choir. Back in the day, a Tape was used for gigs . . .

So, interesting times are afoot . . .

Here's a video giving some background to the EmeraldSabbath Project and it's creator Mike Suilleabhain.

There's a brief clip of the ECC in the Studio, doing a "take".

The track we made can be heard in the background later on in the video . . . .

Mike just put this video up on YT . . .

It's a Rind, Pips and All - of our first run-through at British Grove Studio . . . on the Day.

There were four of us that day who did the original Session for Black Sabbath at Morgan Studios in 1975 . . . .

Myself, and a guy whose name escapes me after all these years . . . . Mike (our Client), and Guy and Ann Protheroe.

For the Majority, it was the first sight of the Music, but by the end of the Session - it was done . . . (Y)

Check the previous Post if you want to hear the finished Track . . . . .

THIS is the original from the 1975 Sabbath Album "Sabotage" . . . . .
