Headphone wet sound only problem

Unread post by t_brom » Mon Jul 17, 2017 10:12 pm

Hi All,

I have recently purchased a Yamaha thr10 second hand. Seems to be in mint condition and I am absolutely loving it for practicing on.

However I have discovered a problem with it which i am hoping is software related and not a hardware fault.

When using headphones to practice with - one of the main reasons i purchased the unit - i am only receiving the wet signal out.

If have no effects on, the volume is very low, even with master and guitar pots turned up. As i increase the gain i just get a very raw fuzz sound with no clean sound combined with it.

If i just put chorus on a tad the volume immediately jumps up - but only the wet chorus signal is heard. Same with reverb and other effects.

Wondering if there is a mapping issue or setting somewhere i have not discovered?

By the way i am aware that the USB output supposedly breaks the signal down to four channels - left and right, wet and dry - but I am specifically talking about the headphone output here.

Has anyone else come across this? Are there any tools/settings people know of that I can use to remap headphone channel outputs? or do we think I've just bought a dud unit...

Any help appreciated, Tom.

Hi Tom, Welcome to the Yamaha Forums. :)

The dry/wet business must be in the cubase settings ?

Once your usb driver is installed, install the THR editor and test that presets function before installing cubase.

When it comes to cubase, I'm a novice since I haven't recorded anything yet,
but there must be members who have lots of expreience in that field.

Best Regards
Peter

Hi,

I appear to have this exact same problem - did you resolve it?

Hi Tom and evillen, welcome to yamahamusicians.com :)

This seems like a really odd issue to me. I would have thought that if you plug headphones into the THR it will feed through exactly what you would get on the speakers.

There was another post about headphone issues with the THR here viewtopic.php?t=9834 Not sure if that is at all relevant to the issues described in the current thread?

It does seem though that you are not the only people with these problems.

Cheers Saul.

Topic starter never returned, so we never got response on the issue.

Using headphones into the THR will play EXACTLY the same WET signal that would come out of the speakers.

Question is if the signal can be selected differently IF CuBase is used.
This may be possible, but I never installed or use CuBase, since I don't record.

If it's a CuBase issue, I can't do much to help, unless those asking can be a bit more specific, and report back.

Regards
Peter

Hi evillen, welcome to the forum and the string section. :D

To try to solve your amp problem, we really need more info about your setup.

Is CuBase involved, or do you only use your computer for jamming tracks and/or THR editor ?

I didn't see cubase mentioned Peter so I assumed this is just the THR and the headphones?

A bit of Googling around shows there are quite a few people with the same or similar issues surrounding the headphone output. I take it you have had no problems like this yourself?

Nope, no problems with 3 different THR amps on 3 different laptops. ((i))
I am now considering installing CuBase on the oldest, no loss if it goes wrong.

Topic starter did mention signal being split into 4 channels = left and right , wet and dry.
I know when you record through CuBase you can seperate the signals like that, and probably add/change effects in the software.

When you plug a guitar straight into the THR, you only get the wet signal (as is) in speakers or headphones.

I don't think the problem is that common, and posters often post in several forums simultaneously.

It's interesting though, and always worth looking into.

I can understand if there is some sort of separation of signal to the headphone output when plugged into a computer and using Cubase as your DAW. Perhaps it separates the headphone output for monitoring of the dry signal? But if the user was not using any software on the computer I can't see how there could be any issues.

I don't have a THR otherwise I would test the whole thing myself. Would definitely be good to nail down exactly what is going on here.
