Thank you both for the welcome.
I think you are correct. No harm In me waiting a bit and seeing the THR30 and Spark in person. Want to hear if the THR30 is an improvement over the original THR. And I want to see what the Spark sounds like a low volumes. Whichever I choose will be placed in my living room and I want something that I can use without disturbing the entire family.

Thought it worth mentioning that the pre-order price does not include VAT. It is calculated for your country at checkout. So for us in the UK that is plus 20% which brings the price up to £194.27. It does include shipping though :)

Still a great price but if you want to order one you need to be quick. At the time of writing, there are only 218 amps left at this pre-order price!

More info about the Positive Grid Spark and how to order here.

Hello again. Thanks for guidance on fixing my THR10 last year, but now my THR5 has suffered a similar fate and after reading this thread, am now considering buying the Katana Air.
One question; does it work with Cubase AI or come with a similar software package?

The Boss Katana Air is a great amp...well I think so anyway :)

It doesn't come with any DAW software but it will work with Cubase and any other DAW software. (Y)

Welcome back. :D
The Boss Katana Air is absolutely a great piece of gear, but consider this …
You have already fried your THR-10x had it repaired under warranty, viewtopic.php?f=135&t=10390#p64136
and now it's broken again along with your THR-5. :?:

IF there is some major peak variations in the local voltage,
even a brand new Katana may have a short life too.

Is anyone else experiencing that their electronics have a short life locally :?:

Regards
Peter

Thanks Saul and Buzzard

I sold the THR10 soon after the fix, but my THR5 suffered from the same room heater blowing recently; it still powers up, but the USB no longer connects with the PC, so not as severe. The dodgy heater is now replaced and the new one plugged into a different wall socket/spur. I don't know enough about electrics to say it was the heater blowing that caused the THR failures, or a mains spike that blew the heater fuse and the THRs on both occasions, but there have been no other casualties.

Anyway, I still only dabble from time to time with the guitar/bass and think the Katana might just help me through the winter,

Get yourself a surge protector just to be on the safe side. They don't need to be expensive. Something like a Belkin BSV400 would do the job.

Of course if you are running on battery power this is not such an issue but still useful to protect all your other devices you might have plugged in (Y)

My PC and several other devices are plugged into surge protected extensions, but I had also been using an extension reel for the heater and a couple of other bits. Not only did I not realise the heater should be plugged straight into the mains, but the extension (even though it is thermally protected) isn't actually unwound. I've sorted my cable nest out now and can't remember if the THRs may have plugged into that too.

Interesting posts here, but they mostly appear to be aimed at electric guitarists. I'm a dyed in the wool acoustic guitarist and so far I've not seen any competition for Yamaha's THR5A - which I've finally plumbed for. Am open to other suggestions, but the acoustic amp genre isn't vastly covered for this niche as far as I could see.

Cheers doc.
Most of the competition amps have an acoustic setting,
but then again more amp types suited for electric guitars.

Since you're a THR-5A owner you got a fine amp dedicated for acoustic guitars.
If you stumble over a Yamaha AG-stomp, you have even more options and settings.

Peter

Many amps are now coming to market sporting full range speaker systems so that opens things up for acoustic players...of which I am one ;)

Never really needed an amp though. I don't like the sound of most preamps fitted to acoustic guitars. It is not easy to create a system that truly replicates the acoustic sound when amplified. Hence why many stick to the mic(s) in front of the guitar thing.

If I really did need an acoustic amp I would probably be looking at the AER 60 Compact which granted is not cheap but does sound fantastic or for something more budget friendly the Fishman Loudbox, Roland AC60 or Fender Acoustic 200. Plenty of options out there now :)

I fully agree to these statements about looking for „real“ acoustic amps.
And one should add to the list also the fantastic amps from Schertler and Acus in the premium league.

A THR5A ist pretty nice and can bring some additional flavor to a „raw“ acoustic guitar.
I use it in the house for some fun playing but mainly as an excellent audio interface.

But there is no comparison to the dream tone I get from my big Schertler Roy.
But this is definitely also another level of price, weight and size ;-)

But just another approach, if it comes to acoustic guitars, might be:

Forget about any „acoustic guitar amps“ at all and go with the pickup into PA or active monitors through a pretty good pre-amp like a
RMI Acouswitch IQ DI.
I can tell you, you can even pimp up a very poor build-in piezo to sound like a high-end microphone setup.
But like always in life it has its price!

Very nice amp that Schertler Roy. I have not come across those before.
