The acclaimed London based Russian pianist Pavel Kolesnikov chose a Yamaha CFX for his latest album ‘ Dances from the Bauyn Manuscript’, a selection of Louis Couperin’s keyboard works.

This latest recording, on Hyperion, is characterised by artistic daring and a vision of exploration. Interestingly, the pieces, Suite in D minor, Suite in G minor and Suite in A major were all composed by Couperin (c. 1626-1661) about 50 years before the invention of what we regard as the modern day piano.

In this context it’s notable that such historically important repertoire should now be performed on one of the world’s most sonically powerful modern day pianos.

Commenting on why he decided upon CFX Pavel said “When I started this recording project I had a clear idea of the sound I wanted to achieve. I was astonished by the intensity of expression of Louis Couperin’s music: Powerful, edgy, sometimes even unrefined. I wanted to find a piano which could embody that unique sound. I was excited to explore a level of control and variation unavailable in a live concert situation.”

Pavel Kolesnikov is internationally renowned for breaking traditional musical boundaries and has been described as a ‘ Poet of the keyboard’, by nature a musical explorer was appointed a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist in 2014 and a Royal College of Music Benjamin Britten Piano fellow the following year.

In addition to his rapidly growing international profile, 2018 will see Pavel performing in some of the UK’s most prestigious concert halls including Cadogan Hall, The Wigmore Hall and The Royal Festival Hall.

When not exploring the piano Pavel is a passionate perfume collector, painter, photographer and keen follower of fashion.
